Rega Planar 3 not spinning fast enough

Post by 100borrowedfilms » 08 Sep 2019 13:10

Hey all, I'm having some issues with my Rega Planar 3.

I recently inherited my late father's record player, which is hugely sentimental and important to me. However, upon receiving it and setting it up in my home I realised the platter wouldn't spin when I switched it on.

I recently purchased the 24V high performance motor upgrade which I sent, along with my record player, to a 'specialist' who said he'd replace the motor, give it some general maintenance and return it back to me. 5 months later (and after partially accepting I'd never see it again, but that's another story...) it appears he didn't even bother to turn it on and see if it worked. The 24V motor has clearly been installed, but the platter is spinning significantly slower than 33rpm.

I've attached a video below which shows the issue. does anyone have any ideas / thoughts on what I should do? It's very important that I don't damage it, but at the same time I'm cautious about spending another £1/200 on something that I could potentially fix myself. Thanks!

The first thing to check is the platter bearing. Lift out the sub-platter, and see if the bearing is dry, or gummed up.
Clean out the well, and wipe the spindle, with isopropyl alcohol or lighter fluid, if necessary.
Do not lose the 3/16" ball bearing at the bottom.
Add just enough light oil (sewing machine oil or #20 machine oil) to cover the ball at the bottom of the well, then a drop on the spindle.

Cheers,
Alec

Very often when a planar is running slowly, the drive pulley is slipping on the motor shaft. They are simply pushed on and secured with a tiny drop of glue. I've seen that on three that have been through my hands.

Edit: Just looking at your video it looks like there is not enough tension on the belt, the drive pulley appears to be spinning away happily, but not transferring drive. Either the belt is no good, or the motor has been attached in slightly the wrong position, by which I mean slightly too close to the sub platter. You may find that the 45rpm speed is slightly better because of the slightly larger pulley diameter giving more belt tension.

Definitely check the centre bearing as Alec suggested as well.

Hey all,

I tried putting oil into the well (enough to cover the ball) and that seemed like it worked! I downloaded a RPM checking app for Android which read it spinning at 33.8rpm. However, after about a minute it appears to have slowed, and the app is reading 29.2rpm

@Trio, yeah I agree with the tension issue. I'm thinking of splashing out on the Rega White Drive Belt to see if that makes the difference. Do you think that would help at all?

I find it odd that the speed is fluctuating, surely if the belt was the issue it would either maintain or not maintain a steady 33.5rpm. I'm also praying that, due to the fluctuating speed, that the motor hasn't been attached in the wrong place, as that sounds like a nightmare to correct! Any thoughts on next steps would be greatly appreciated!

Just had a look at your video, looks to me as though the pulley is spinning ok but the belt is slipping. Did your 'tech' fit a new belt with the motor, if not it could be stretched so a new belt could help. You could also try cleaning the pulley, belt and subplatter with alcohol.

I agree with comments above. I had a slipping belt in my Planar 6. It was slipping when using a brush to clean the records. I used alcohol to clean the pulley and sub-platter rim and mild dish washing soap+water solution to clean the belt and gave it a good rinse with water. No slipping ever since.
