Rega Planar 3 2016 - cartridge without adjustment VTA

Post by Leo_Fender » 14 Apr 2018 15:21

Good afternoon!
Please advise a compatible cartridge for which it will not be necessary to regulate VTA.
I have this installed Elys 2 and the balance is strongly shifted to the right channel. Externally, the cartridge looks good, the turntable is aligned horizontally.
So I want to try another cartridge.

Why is non-adjusting the VTA so important? I use Denon DL-110 on my Planar 3 (2016) without shims and it sings.

Thank you!
At first I thought that the problem was in the cartridge and I wanted to try with the other without additional costs.
It seems to me that the tonearm is twisted. I hear a strong balance shift to the right channel.

Is the tonearm twisted in relation to the platter as well?

Either the tonearm is not properly mounted (as mtqpier says) or the plinth is bent. Can you check that?

Tonearm is firmly fixed to the plinth. The plinth is flat, checked the building level.
P.S. Sorry for my english.

I think you have a couple of options to correct:

1. You can use thin washers to shim the inner mount for the base of the tonearm.

2. You can use thin shims to adjust at the cartridge.

My personal preference I think would be to fix it at the base of the tonearm.

I have heard of the screws for the tonearm being over tightened and bending the MDF plinth. The screws don't need to be super tight.

If you buy it new, return it to your dealer and ask them to correct it.
You don’t have to modify it. It’s the problem of Rega and your dealer.

I agree with mtqpier. Return the turntable to the dealer if you bought it new.

Seems like the headshell is twisted. I've heard of this defect occurring with the older RB300/250 arms. Not much you can do to fix it, so best do as others have suggested and return it to the dealer.

Yeah don't try to tweak it yourself, just return it. That's a bad manufacturing defect. Rega QC in action once again...

As the OP states this is a 2016 model, I doubt any dealer would take it back. Similar to an earlier post, I have two suggestions if this is not possible, neither perfect but should Help bring the cartridge back into vertical alignment :

1. Partly unscrew the 3 arm mounting screws & temporarily remove the LH inward one. Try sliding a thin washer between the arm mounting & plinth at this point, push the screw back through & gently tighten all 3 again. If this doesn't Help straighten the arm, then maybe try a small rubber washer so that as you tighten, the arm has a small amount of adjustment. Be careful not to repeat this too often so you don't enlarge the holes in the plinth.

Use an accurate bubble level, also checking it against the platter so both headshell/platter will be horizontal after adjustment.

2. Discard the third cartridge screw & glue with something removable like Pritt-Stick a thin strip of card front-back along the top centre of the cartridge (maybe 2mm wide x the length of the cartridge).

By carefully tightening/loosening the two remaining mounting screws, the cart can be made to tilt slightly L or R in the headshell - a method I have used successfully for azimuth with Rega arms in the past & easier than fixed shims which do not allow fine adjustment. Obviously the bubble level will be no Help in this case & this also depends on the OPs abilities to re align the cartridge accurately without the Help of the 3rd Rega screw.

edit: why does the word Help always change to a capital H when I've typed it with a lower h?!

The tt being a 2016 model doesn`t mean it is bought new in 2016. The 2016 model is actually the latest P3 version in production. So my advice is, if the tt is bought recently, it should be returned to the dealer. The op shouldn`t attempt to fix it himself.
