The Spinning Toy!

Post by hi_torq » 03 May 2019 16:50

I called into my nearest Rega dealer today, and picked up their very last spinning toy. It cost me all of nowt! They did ask if I'd ever bought anything Rega from them before; I had to admit no - although I do have a Lustre GST-1 (a.k.a. Acos Lustre) which does share some roots with Rega. (And it's a very local company, so I would support them in principle.)

I am an engineer, so was slightly out of my comfort zone in a hi-fi shop. To their credit, they did not start spouting pseudo-scientific claptrap, or performing witchcraft.

Anyway, it's a great little thing! (And I am 50, so need toys.)

It's to illustrate the principle that the centre-of-mass of the platter must be above the bearing contact point, otherwise instability will ensue. Of course, I am hard-pressed to think of any turntable that does not conform to this rule. I've seen a good fair few in my time, and can't name one. (Can you?)

As an Engineer, you'll have endless fun experimenting with your new toy, putting theory into practice. Almost every component can be modified/improved on, with several alternative suppliers all over the world.
Enjoy, as they say.
