Garrard Repair in US: Who?

Good afternoon:

I love my 3-tone "Ice Cream Truck" Type A; it's a storyteller from a bygone analog world.

My problem is that it really needs to be serviced--lubed, oiled--but there is nobody at all in my area. It has the original Shure M3D cartridge that tracks at close to 5 grams; any lighter than that, and the trip mechanism kicks in @20 seconds before the end of each LP side. As it is now, my LPs will sometimes skip just before the aforementioned end of the record, but I am reluctant to have it track any heavier than it currently is. It seems that most who own a Type A with the Shure M3D track at around 3 grams, but again, I cannot go that low since my obviously mis-adjusted/in-need-of-lube trip mechanism requires attention.

Is there any old-timer anywhere in the US to whom I can send my Type A and have it gone through correctly so that it will work as it should for years to come? Thank you.

Where are you located again, Every Mann...Let me know, as I probably could recommend someone good and local...You definitely need a guy that handles "vintage audio" and not just any ol' surround sound/home theater specialist! Let me know, and I'll see what I can find for you... :D

I've got a good track record for this sort of thing, by the way...

And honestly, that Garrard just oozes class...IMO a beatutiful piece of MCM machinery! 8)

Hello Vinyl Master, and thanks:

I'm much more of a happy miser than someone who is rich/wealthy/comfortably well-off, but I want to spend my $$ wisely on this Garrard. About 10 years back I sent out my other table--an ELAC Miracord 40H that my dad bought new in the 1960s--to a turntable genius named Joel Thorner to have it overhauled; I have no doubt now that it will be working for another 30 years. Sadly Mr Thorner is gone. My idea with this Garrard is similar: not send it to whoever might be the closest, but to get it to an old-timer who won't just do the basic minimum, but who knows the ins & outs of using improved trip mechanism parts off of later A70 tables and who can get it tracking well at 3 grams.

Does anyone know "the best" old-timer turntable wiz to recommend?

Sadly, Joel Thorner has been gone for ten years and his Turntable Factory only survived for a short time after his death. We used to chat on the phone occasionally if one or the other hsd a stubborn problem. You want someone with, above all, mrchanical acumen. Just because someone is good with computers and digital does not mean he will comprehend a Garrard Type A, which is among the more complex record changers out there...or even something simple like a Garrard AT-6. Sometimes it seems that among today's techs, the two talents are mutually exclusive!

I retired from the business at about the time Joel died, and work on only my own stuff, now. Among them is a biscuit-tin Garrard Type A, but mine lacks the red rubber gasket around the periphery of the chassis. Mine is black.

Just a thought, too, but if you were willing to do the work yourself, here are some videos of a restoration...Be forewarned, there are 12 videos here, but he does go into much detail...
