Garrard Type A Mark II 'Auto Start' Not Working

Post by Marcham93 » 08 Dec 2019 19:57

Hey, all. I'm having a problem with my Garrard Type A Mark II, and I haven't been able to solve the issue on my own as of yet. I had a perfectly working Type A turntable minus an accurate spinning speed (it was slow). I ended up ordering new bearings, installed them, and the speed was perfect. However, something I must have done or touched at some point has caused the auto-start to stop functioning.

The manual function works perfectly, as well as the 'auto-return' function - it trips correctly at the end of the record. However, pressing the 'auto-start' simply turns the motor on and spins the platter - it does not cause the unit to begin moving the automatic mechanism.

My best guess is that there is a bit underneath that I believe is supposed to be kicked over when you select 'start,' but it isn't moving. I've included a few videos below to possibly help out with the explanation.

Any help is extremely welcome as I've been struggling with this for several days.

Granny sucking eggs so apologies.

The deck auto starts by the mechanism attached to the control starting the motor via the switch which is latched 'on' and the trip lever is urged into proximity with the centre hub where the tang on said hub engages and pushes it up to unlock the cam.

What follows is memories of adjusting my Lab 80mk2 which is related. Your trip lever looks to be set slightly low. I know you say it works at side end, but making note of where it's set now and raising it via the adjustment screw may aid starting via the control. Just make sure the trip lever still clears the underside of the locking piece and that the friction plate is dry and clean (I don't think it should be lubricated at all as it adds drag).

P.S. if possible, may i suggest you lube the main bearing shaft with a lightly viscous but sinter-safe oil and then anchor the hub into place. If I'm correct, there may be a larger C clip holding the platter to the hub and I'd try to just remove this I think, leaving the rotating hub in place (hopefully someone else may confirm this suggestion - or tell me I'm talking rubbish).

Thanks for the advice!

I actually found out the issue thanks to some help from a fellow on another forum. Apparently, when the 'autostart' is pulled, there is a long arm under the turntable that moves and pushes a bit to engage the automatic processes. One of the pieces was bent - probably about 1/8" in the wrong direction - but bending it back fixed everything.

After days of headaches, my problem is solved!
