Garrard SP25MkV centre spindle

Post by PipDrumHacker » 28 Aug 2019 17:33

Hi, this is my first post so hope I'm doing this correctly. I have a Dynatron RG1011PW Music Centre that I saved from a skip. Refurbishment is going fine apart from it's missing it's centre spindle and I just can't figure out what type it is. The deck is a Garrard SP25 MkV belt drive. The unit itself has no earth within the mains

so I think it may have been built for the USA or Australian market. I've attached pictures of the centre post in the hope that someone can help me identify what I've got here. I have a couple of other Garrard decks, one in a Hacker Gondolier and the other in a similar Dynatron HFC 76 that has an SP25 MkIV but neither have this type of centre post. Please help.

Welcome to Vinyl Engine.

The centre spindle, is a plastic moulding tha 'snaps' on to the outside of the centre post that you have pictured. Sadly, over the years, they can become loose and are often lost.

I have a rescued deck like yours, now fitted in a Hacker GP42, I will get a picture of the centre.

Thank you Alan, a picture would be great so I can either source or try moulding a replacement

Dave, I sort of got it right, it's been a while since this Hacker has been used and I'd forgotten exactly how it fits.

However here are the pics. The center spindle is a plastic moulding, vacuum plated. It locates in the platter, so revolves with it.

Best of luck in finding one !

There is a listing on ebay for a MkV, for spares, maybe you can do a deal for the part you need.

Thank you Alan, that's not the shape I was expecting but it all makes sense now I see it. Also thanks for the eBay link. Shame it's collection only in Croydon and I'm in Geordie land but I'll see if the sellers willing to strip it down and post. Otherwise your pictures have given me some ideas based around bottle tops and the clicking end of a ball point pen.
You've been a great help. Thank you so much.

This was certainly a common deck in the UK - in fact, going back to 1979/80, my junior school Goodsell record player had one! (Along with Goldring G800 cartridge and Goodmans RB35 speakers...)

I was not "Record Player Monitor" (much to my dismay), and never got the chance to take the thing apart (much as I'd have liked to), so the rotating spindle is a new one on me - knowing full well about the Autoslim versions where it is fixed.

(Yeah, we learned "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" to this thing, and then the show was cancelled when the headmaster died.)

WOAH there!!

The UK had the more conventional idler driven and almost fully changer based SP25 up to the mk IV, which used the 'plug in' short single record spindle that came with the other Autoslim changers (AT6 and 'first generation' relatives were slightly different from the later ones as the main bearing shaft changed diameter in the mid 60's I gather and very old spindles don't fit).

Things changed hugely with the belt drive Autoslim Derivatives. I honestly don't remember the UK having the SP25 V or VI models, but we DID have the 125SB with the fully altered 'S' shaped tonearm from bearing cradle backwards and counterweight adjustable tracking force (no dial on the bearing cradle as previously). I think our laws changed then so we couldn't buy the chassis deck and plinth separately in the UK. (The SP25 III was still available in 1973 here, the IV a '74 introduction I believe and the 125SB was only a year or two on for us I remember*).

The belt drive bought along a totally different platter, full length platter bearing sleeves I think (maybe the SP25IV had these too, I can't remember) and according to an early HiFi Choice review, the tonearm horizontal bearings were substantially tweaked or refined for low friction operation and tracking forces of under 2g which earlier models couldn't consistently manage right to end of side...

So, the stuff above goes round the houses but I think it may give our younger viewers a touch more insight, at least into the UK market, which by 1974 was totally dominated by the Pioneer PL-12D which sold in thousands per week at this time.

* - Elton John released a singe of the Beatles song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' in 1975 which I bought and first played on a 125SB 'Module' we had on dem in the store.... cartridge was a Shure M75-6S

The OP's MkV came fitted in a Dynatron, as originally did the deck I pictured, now in one of my Hacker GP42 record players.

Dynatron being a well known UK manufacturer, so maybe, oem supply only for the MKV.

Let me know if you still need one of these. It’s a bit of plastic so it shouldn’t cost much to ship from the U.S.
