Lab 80 Manual Spindle

Post by Kiritimatipete » 29 Dec 2018 22:53

I’ve got a Lab 80 that needs a tidy up to bring it back into condition. I’m looking for a manual spindle as the one with my deck seems to have gone AWOL. Anyone got one kicking around that they’d be prepared to part with? Fingers crossed...

Since it isn't connecting to any mechanics anything of proper size will do. Like similar stems from other Garrards(SP25 is very common) or any other. These may not sit in the same but help to center the record as good. Until you find original.

Great advice! Thanks!

It's a different length to the SP25 (autoslim) manual spindles so watch out if the replacement isn't to fall down the centre hole... It may be just a nicely finished length of rod in the right diameter in all honesty (mines in storage and I can't get to it to confirm).

Worth looking out for Lab 80 parts, they do come up, even here in the UK from time to time...

I measured the spindle and it is a bit tricky. The length is 35-37mm, half of it is 7mm dia(⌀ record hole) and insert to the platter center in 5.95mm dia(close to 6mm that may work as well). I remember SP25 spindle has tapered cut on the side but it may be 7mm dia all the way.
I would make something out of stick of wood(like pencil) to start with.

Again, great advice. Thanks very much.

The Lab 80 manual spindle is unique. Nothing else
from Garrard works...and the Type A/A70/RC88 spindles offered up by EBay sellers as bring for the Lab 80 don't fit.

You could start with a hardwood dowel of appropriate diameter, chuck it in an electric drill, and turn it down to size so it fits into the hole, using a wood rasp or similar. Or use s piece of plastic rod to start with.
