Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge with 2M Blue Stylus

Postby fet_thunderdome » 23 Oct 2017 08:55

Hi Folks,
I was wondering if there were differences between a 2M Blue cartridge body VS a 2m Red one, because on Ortofon website it's clearly indicated that they are totally the same. The only difference i can see is the color of the "2M" writings. I'm asking just because i'm going to buy a new TT which happens to have a 2M Red pre-mounted, and i'd like to spare myself the annoying process of replacing the cartridge (before you ask, it's a Pro-Ject, so i cannot put a headshell), and i'd just snap in the stylus.
Thanks in advance.

I did read somewhere on here from someone who did just that that the match was good. Find here below the cartridge specs from both and in italic the slightest differences that should not be an issue really.

Cartridge spec for the RED;
Output voltage at 1000 Hz, 5cm/sec. - 5,5 mV
Channel balance at 1 kHz - 1,5 dB
Channel separation at 1 kHz - 22 dB
Channel separation at 15 kHz - 15 dB
Frequency range at - 3dB - 20-22.000 Hz
Frequency response - 20-20.000 Hz + 3 / - 1 dB
Internal impedance, DC resistance - 1,3 kOhm
Internal inductance - 700 mH
Recommended load resistance - 47 kOhm
Recommended load capacitance - 150-300 pF
Cartridge colour, body/stylus - Black/Red
Cartridge weight - 7,2 g

Cartridge spec for the BLUE;
Output voltage at 1000 Hz, 5cm/sec. - 5,5 mV
Channel balance at 1 kHz - 1,5 dB
Channel separation at 1 kHz - 25 dB
Channel separation at 15 kHz - 15 dB
Frequency range at - 3dB - 20-25.000 Hz
Frequency response - 20-20.000 Hz + 2 / - 1 dB
Internal impedance, DC resistance - 1,3 kOhm
Internal inductance - 700 mH
Recommended load resistance - 47 kOhm
Recommended load capacitance - 150-300 pF
Cartridge colour, body/stylus - Black/Blue

so it seems that's a little more sensitive to high frequencies and a little more separation. But i don't think these are audible differences. At least i hope. I'm very lazy and i'm not a fan of reinstall a cartridge when cables are directly from the inside of the tonearm. Should i damage them in some way and it could be a problem much bigger than a 3kHz and 3DB.. thanks

Hi

I believe the cartridge bodies of the 2M Red and Blue are identical in every way. The spec differences are purely down to the stylus assembly in each case.

In other words, a 2M Red with a Blue stylus is a 2M Blue to all intents and purposes (apart from the colour of the logo on the body!).

Correct. Both 2M Red and Blue share the exact same bodies (i.e., same magnets, etc.) and the same goes for the 2M Bronze and Black sharing the same as well.

You can also install all of the OM Series Styli OM 10, 20, 30, and 40 along with the DJ Series it will look goofy and you will have to set the VTF accordingly for the compliance's. Ortofon used the same motor bodies on these cartridges just different wiring recipes and plugged them into different outer bodies.
