GE VR-225

Post by jj208t » 18 Oct 2017 01:41

Hi everyone,

I tried my GE VR-225 today. I put a NOS Electro-Voice 0.5 mil diamond stylus into it. It is a very bright sounding cartridge. But, the highs are clean. From the midrange on down, the sound was rough. No obvious mistracking or gross distortion. It just reminded me of a run of the mill ceramic from the early 60's. As if the cantilever was too stiff. I tried it first at 3 grams and then at 3.6 grams. I did not want to go higher with a 0.5 mil stylus. I had high hopes for it and my Golden Classic as I have a VR 1000. But, the VR-225 did not even come close.

That suspension has been sitting and very likely getting stiffer for 60 years now. Play a bunch of records you don't care about and see it it loosens up. There are also a variety of witches' brews that might or might not soften the damper.

The suspension is in the stylus assembly only. The cantilever pierces a rubber block in the assembly. There is an additional rubber block in there as well. It may loosen up. I have about a dozen NOS never opened styli for it anyway. I will try it again. And I have the Golden Classic to try as well.
