Stylus for an Empire 5000 L.A.C.?

Postby Ghirsh » 16 Oct 2017 23:18

I'm brand new to turntables, and recently acquired an old Technics SL-Q2 along with a pretty good record collection. I'm excited to start listening, but the stylus is busted! The TT has an Empire 5000 L.A.C. and the current broken stylus is opaque blue in color. There's very little information online about this cartridge, but I think it will take a 440D, which is a bit pricey ($80). Does anybody know of other more inexpensive styli that will work with this cartridge? Also, other than Ebay and lpGear, where else do you buy your styli and TT parts? Thanks for the help!

The LpGear is probably made by JICO and most likely a very good stylus. $80 is not a bad price for a new quality stylus. You could try Gary at Voice of Music. He may have something cheaper.

Navigating Empire model numbers can make you a bit crazy. $80 is not out of line, if it really is an LAC-type stylus and made by Jico. Do some searching on Gary's site, but stay way from anything that says Swiss made; Japan equivalents are usually Jico, and quite decent. If you can post a picture we may be able to recommend a specific stylus.

Ok great. Thanks for the link. I would try to give you some pictures, but I can't figure out how exactly to do that. The cartridge just reads "EMPIRE 5000 L.A.C." and the stylus is an opaque blue and reads "EMPIRE I." It sounds like I just need to commit and fork over the money for the 440D stylus. Thanks!
