Shure M55E vs Stanton 500EE vs AT95E

Postby mark79 » 17 Jul 2017 01:36

Hello All: Can anyone tell me which of these vintage cartridges are the best. I really like the Stanton 500EE, and I found very good copies of the 820EE and the 820E. The 820EE tracks at 1 to 1 1/2 grams, while the 820E tracks at 2 to 3 1/2 grams, but I've tracked it down to 1 1/2 with no problems at all. I also have a copy of the 820D7AL.I have always like the Stanton. All of Shure's products are now made in Mexico and I wonder if they are the same. The M55E is supposed to be very good if you can find them on E Bay. Then the AT95E also has it's advantages. Thanks for any comments. Regards; Mark79

Personally ( this is another way of starting with YMMV) -the question of which models have OEM styli available makes the AT95e pretty attractive. These have now been made for a long enough period of time and enough units sold that there are even companies making upgrade styli models for that body.

I love the Stanton too but found it harder and harder to get the original stylus plus its harder to get better stylus eg Line Contact so upgraded to a AT150e (second hand) and what an improvement couldnt believe the change know have a At 155LC stylus to go on when this stylus gives up the ghost.Stanton Very good AT150e Different league. But i would say the stanton is better than the At95e. Not had a Shure m97xe but did look at it when upgrading and it was the Shure or the AT went with the AT.

Hi Mark, i can definitely vouch for the Shure M55E. I own two of them and was lucky enough to obtain original stylus for them too. They are quite high output compared to other MM carts & the sound is really sweet, well balanced and sounds great to my ears. The AT95E is also worthy of a mention but lacks the detail of the M55E. I do believe though that there is now an upgraded stylus available for the AT95 so that's another consideration. As someone else has said, ask ten people and you will get ten different answers. Your ears are the best judge you can ask.

I have no experience with the Stanton, but I really enjoy the M55E when it has a good stylus on it. But the "EVG" aftermarket ones havent sounded good to me.
I think the AT95E is a bargain. Great sound at a cheap price.

I can't say which of them is "best". They sound different and suit different peoples preferences.
