Cartridge Quandry

Postby LionelBusch » 14 Jul 2017 20:40

I recently purchased a Thorens TD160 that came with an old Ortofon VMS20E cartridge. I am considering cartridge options for this table. I am thinking of a Nagaoka MP110. I have also read that I can upgrade the Ortofon by purchasing a stylus for a VMS30e for about the same money. How would these 2 options stack up against each other? The table is running through an old Sansui 1000a tube receiver.

Thanks

PS
The VMS is not labeled as a Mark II....would this stylus replacement still work?

The VMS30e would be my choice, though I've not tried any recent Nagaokas - so bear that in mind. I'm sure the Nag' is a good one though, and you're more likely to find a decent supply of replacement styli for it as it's newer than the Ortofon.

I think the stylus on the VMS will be of higher performance than the one on the Nag' (described as SuperFine but just a nice elliptical, from what I can tell). But here is a thread on the VMS30e from a few years ago:

Good luck - nice deck!

Judge, thanks for the information and pointing me to those threads, they have a ton of great information.

I would not use the Nagaoka. For what it is, it is overpriced and underperforming in its price bracket.

The Ortofon VMS20E is a much better cartridge, and the VMS30E stylus (if you can get a new old stock genuine article) is an outstanding stylus that sounds wonderful.

The high compliance of the VMS20e will suit your tonearm better than the Nagaoka.

People love the VMS20 and 30 here, so perhaps a new stylus is a safe bet.
