Cartridge advice

Postby sweetleaf-63 » 19 Jun 2017 20:39

I recently got a Dual CS505-4 turntable with an AT95E cartridge fitted and believe this is a reasonable one, but is there a better one I could fit?
A second question is that I read a comment somewhere that "you havent heard a mono record properly unless youve used a mono cartridge" I understand the groove profiles are different so it makes some sense, so is there a mono cartridge I can fit into a spare headshell.
Thanks for any info or advice.

The 505 was originally sold with a Dual or Ortofon OM cartridge. Those are still a great choice, like the OM10 or OM20. A more modern alternative could be the Ortofon 2M Red or Blue. Ortofon also makes mono cartridges but they are quite expensive.

Thanks. Would you consider one of those better than the AT95e then? and if the mono cartridges are expensive is it worth the expense for the benifits it would give?

Unless you have a big collection of mono records, I'd probably hold off on the mono cart. A cheaper investment to hold you over would be a mono switch box, and even then I'd only get one if you have a decent number of mono records.

RE: the stereo cartridge, what is the rest of your system? You might be better off putting the money towards other components (e.g. speakers) rather than spending it on a minor cartridge upgrade. I assume the stylus on the 95E is new? If not, time to buy a new one if you have no idea how many hours are on it.

Mono records, not that many really, Stones, Beatles etc and some classical so you are probably right that it may not be worth it.
The AT95E isn't new so unsure how much use it has had so by changing it I would then know I have a good one and I don't consider that an expensive thing to do given how important they are. Well speakers, in the week a guy is bringing me some Celestion 150 to try.

I just installed an OM cartridge on my CS 505-3. I worry that other cartridges may be too heavy for the ultra low mass tonearm, or won't be the same height as the cartridge it was designed for (no VTA adjustment for this tonearm ). If you get an OM,you can fit a D25m stylus on it, which (kind of) turns it into a mono cartridge as I understand it.

Thanks jeff449 thats brilliant! I had kinda decided to buy a new complete OM10 cartridge so will buy a DM25m stylus to clip in and try as well.
