Shure V15 III Jico neoSAS vs Grace F9 Soundsmith Ruby?

Postby nyuser » 19 Jun 2017 00:54

Earlier posts have been fairly consistent in describing the Grace F9 cartridge with the Soundsmith Ruby CL stylus as superior to the Shure V15 Type III with the Jico SAS stylus. However, I am wondering if anyone has had a chance to compare the Shure V15 III with the new neoSAS stylus, with the sapphire cantilever, against the Grace F9 with the Soundsmith Ruby CL stylus.

From the few comments I've seen online I understand that the Jico neoSAS stylus is somewhat better that the older SAS stylus (I cannot comment as I have no direct experience). However, I have not seen any comparisons against the Grace F9 with the Soundsmith stylus.

I recently mounted the Jico neoSAS on on Shure V15 cartridge (on a Jelco 750d arm on a Linn LP12). So far this is the best cartridge and stylus combination I have heard in this set-up. But, the upgrade bug has bitten and I am wondering if it is worth adding a Grace F9 cartridge.

I think the 750D is a little to heavy for the Grace F9. I had mine mounted on a Grace 707 which is a light arm and it was a match made in heaven....

Thanks for the quick response. I understand that the F9 is a high compliance cartridge which will tend to perform better in a low mass arm. I was hoping that the F9 would work on the Jelco 750d based on some indirect facts. I have seen comments from people who have had good results using the Grace F9 on an SME 3009 Type II Improved (removable headshell) arm. This SME arm has an effective mass of 9.5 grams - the same as the Jelco 750d. However, if this is an apples to oranges comparison I understand.

I also have an SME 3009 Series II Improved (removable headshell) I can use if this is a better combination.

I If anyone with direct experience with these combinations (Grace F9 and Jelco 750d; Grace F9 and SME 3009 type II Improved with removable headshell) can comment I'd appreciate it.
