Replacement cartridge for Sony ps-4750

Post by bschneider » 02 May 2017 12:39

Hello,

What would you recommend as replacement cartridge for my Sony PS-4750?
Right now i have a Grado Prestige Black, but maybe other brands will track better with this tonearm?

Thanks,
Bas

How do you like the grado black now? Looking for anything in terms of change in sound? Whats your budget?

Maybe try lowering VTA (lower the back of the arm at the pivot point) a little if your table allows for it. If your table doesnt, try stacking a few old albums under the one you're playing, this will effectively lower your VTA (try one at a time and listen for changes in sound). Or slightly higher tracking force. I haven't used the grado black, but have used the blue/red/gold. I did not find any of them to be lacking in bass. Overall I really enjoy the gold. Another alternative is a new stylus for the black. I believe the '8MZ' is sort of the go-to for grado cartridges, but I've yet to try it.

If you're itching to upgrade, some carts you may want to look into: grado gold (may shy away from this though if you dont like the black), ortofon 2m blue, Denon dl-110, audio technica 440 (if you can find one), probably a few others in this price range. If you can stretch the budget a bit further: Sumiko Blue Point Special Evo III (high output one so you dont need a mc input), ortofon 2m bronze, dynavector 10x5.

What are you using for speakers, amplifier, preamp, and phono preamp?

It's the Sony ps-4750 turntable, cambridge audio 540 phono pre-amp, sansui 3900 amp. And mission bookshelf speakers with magnat subwoofer (speakers are soon to be replaced. Not sure what excactly). Audioquest evergreen interlinks.

I was indeed looking for ortofon 2m-blue. Or denon. But im not sure what worksbest on my set.

Zombie thread alert - but I just picked up a ps-4750 that came with a Shure V15 Type IV. The Shure sounds really great, except for the total lack of low end. I also have an Ortofon 2M Red that sounds like crap with no bass (also sucked on a Rega). The Grado Black was boring and missing detail.

Then I tried the Ortofon OM5E and everything sounds right, I just want overall higher performance.

Music is your typical music nerd mix of rock/jazz/blues/new wave/electronica/country/60s-70s R&B.

Any thoughts on where to go?

As you like the sound of the Ortofon you could always fit a better OM tip on the 5E body (all the bodies in the OM range were the same). The genuine Ortofon Stylus 20 would be a significant upgrade.

It’s all budget dependent of course but my favourite version of the OM/Super OM range is the 30.
