Empire 66 e/x opinions

Post by Remos112 » 15 Apr 2017 19:20

hello everybody I recently bought a Technics sl-1410 in nearly new condtion, it has the Empire 66 e/x cartridge installed. I have searched the web for info on this cart but found little to nothing helpful. How is this cart considered? I have very mixed feelings about it myself. good full sound, nice bass and clearly audible treble for example cymbals etc. However some record seem to sound worse then on my Technics sl 1910 with standard cartridge. Like leaner or something, very hard to describe. So basically my question is how good is this cartridge supposed to be? And is there any way to upgrade it with a better stylus, or should I look for another cartridge all together?
My setup
Technics Sl-1410
Rega fono mini Preamp
Yamaha YTH-499 speakers/amplifier

To compare the Empire ....Certainly - you cannot compare with Japanese cartridges . Sound Empire - deep and smooth . Treble enough . Japanese cartridges ( compared to Empire ) - are too loud and thin sound - with the rise at high frequencies ..... Based on the 66-series Empire has released a lot of versions of cartridges . This is a good cartridge .

That's great info, so basically the 66 e/x is the 2nd cheapest from that series. Would it take a styles from one of the higher end models? Or are the bodies different? Thanks a lot so far!

I don't know - are there any differences in the bodies of the 66-series . May vary the inductance and the resistance of the windings . I do not know . Try to contact WUALTA - he has a great experience at Empire . http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php? ... ts.468129/ .......66-series - early 70's ....

Empire tended to use one body for a line and differentiate by stylus so that is a very good chance. You can usually see from stylus vendors and what is compatible.

This is what I found on the other forum vs-music linked
[quote]The best original stylus for this body, the purple S912E (Pfanstiehl 239-PDE), does appear on auction sites, sometimes for reasonable money, and is worth pursuing,/[quote]
This would be the stylus for the 66qe/x Got to get my hands on one of these. Sidenote I am apreciating this cardridge more and more, some mint old albums and new presses \sound awesome, while some really sound meh. PRobably this is more the fault of the vinyl, the cartridge is rather unforgiving to the lesser quality releases. I guess this would be even worse on a higher end cartridge right?

There are a ton of aftermarket but original purple replacement are pretty rare. I have a couple of 4000 XL carts and have been watching for a while and have not seen a purple one of the bay site.
