It's not even New In Box.

And for £28,000, he should at least tell us the provenance.

Am I stating the obvious when I suggest he probably thought he entered £280?

I think you are almost certainly right about £280. Mind you, some of the prices for things related to vinyl playback are hilarious. People find an old record player and think they have the crown jewels! One of my favourites was an Amstrad TP12 described as a classic high end turntable!

A NIB still sealed V15-VxMR just sold at auction on ebay for $800 and I thought that was a lot. I finally got one of those about a month ago with original stylus that was unused because the owner used the SAS instead and also included that with the auction. I feel like I got a good deal at half the sealed VxMR's auction price, but now that I finally have this Holy Grail cartridge, I've finally heard it and I can say that it's a good cartridge for sure. But there are other options for a lot less money that are just as good or better. Of course, there are other options for a lot more money that aren't nearly as good, too.

I think all the Shure V15 range command something of a premium. I always fancied a mk3 to go with my sme 3009 series 2 improved, just because it was such a classic combination.

The seller must have modified the listing. It is now listed as Buy It Now for £250.

Seems a bit more reasonable. I thought it was probably a mistake, but in today's market you can't always be sure!

Agreed. I have seen some very, very strange prices on the 'bay! I've seen some equally strange prices on Amazon as well — aftermarket conical styli for $900, that sort of thing. Maybe an error, or maybe waiting for the right sucker to come along.

Yeah, noticed a while ago that the "waiting for the right sucker to come along" practice is meanwhile pretty widespread and certainly not limited to a specific range of old hifi gear.
I mean even Dual turntables, which are very (!) common in old germany have risen
sharply over the last couple years. Really some kind of strong inflation there.

Here is another example that is slightly less dramatic, but just as bizarre. This seller is charing $122 for an aftermarket Shure stylus. The stylus is just a basic bonded elliptical, nothing special. I bought two of these styli from V-M Audio Enthusiasts last year for $12.50 each, and other eBay sellers offer them for $18 to $22.

Right, well, noticed the "12 sold" and "only 1 left" remarks. Cheap manipulative
tactics at work here. #-o

I had a NIB VxMR and 2 NIB additional stylus. I had to crack 1 replacement when my housekeeper decided to dust the TT and of coarse bent the cantilever. I was never happy with the sound. It did not do well in my Rega P5 with RB700 arm. Sold the Cartridge w/stylus for $650 and extra sealed stylus for $450. Now I wish I had it to try in the AR ETL-1 or even the CJ Walker CJ5.

Those expensive ebay listings are always played away as what the seller does when they are out of stock to discourage potential buyers without having to end a listing. But I can't help but think that if they sell a few to an unwitting customer in the meantime that they simply take the money and deliver the product. After all, $121 might not sound unreasonable to someone who doesn't know anything. I could see the policy actually working 100% of the time with a much higher price, like $1,000. Just as easily done, right?

Agreed Needlestein. I was told the exact same thing by a guy who works with a big ebay seller. And yes, it's quite possible some people won't think twice about buying it at an inflated price only because they don't know any better, and the 'only 1 left' actually helps them in making a quick decision.

For what it's worth, I used to get my styli from that seller in BMRR's link, but didn't anymore when he started sending me styli that weren't the same as those on the image. IME, there is a much better chance of getting a good Pfanstiehl if it's Japanese made, but the guy used to send me the Swiss made ones instead, unlike the ones in his photos which clearly state made in Japan, with an OEM asterisk prefacing the stylus number.
