Phono Pre-Amp suggestion

Postby HerMelin84 » 07 Mar 2017 20:15

Hi

I'm looking for a suitable pre amp for my setup. At the time I'm only listening through my Sennheiser HD700 hooked up to a Pro-Ject Head Box DS. The turntable is a simple Pioneer Pl-990.

Any suggestions for a suitable pre-amp stage are welcome.

How much are you thinking of spending and what cartridge do you have on the turntable?

The cartridge is a MM. I'm thinking of spending up to about 250$.

I'm no expert on phono preamps in that price category but a friend of mine recently went through a lot of phono preamps. In that price category there is a US made preamp:

It is a very good preamp for the money. Its about half the amount your are considering spending and it performs much better than one would expect for the money. On top of that it also supports MC cartridges.

Good luck whatever you end up buying,

After a ton of research I bought the already mentioned Schiit Mani, it really is a bit of a giant killer.

There's also the Emotiva XPS-1 which apparently doesn't sound as good, but has a lot of options, which is nice if you're running different carts.

If you're looking to spend a bit more, the Lounge Audio LCR MK3 seems to be the best pre-amp in the sub-1000 euro range.

I don't know if they are plentiful in your region but, I would add the Bellari VP130 tube pre.
I just love mine. And with a fresh Mullard tube...nice.
