Would a Denon DL-110 work well with my Pioneer PL-330?

Postby HeadOnAPike » 11 Jan 2017 23:12

I'm gonna get a new cartridge soon, and $200 is the most I'm willing to spend. Would this be a good match with my turntable? It has a J tone arm.

Also, do the metals my headshell is made of make any difference? I've read in some places yes, and others say no. I know the weight can make a difference. This is what I currently have, after the headshell that came with my player broke (the original Pioneer one):

I assume your Pioneer tonearm is medium mass. And usually most Pioneers into the late 1970's are. This should do fine with a Denon DL-110 as that is a nice High Output Moving Coil choice and medium mass. Many Pioneer users from this period own the DL-110, it is a common MC choice. I think you'll do fine. That headshell should be OK, do remember the Pioneers usually call for a 49 mm overhang to achieve Stevenson alignment geometry. Enjoy thy Pioneer and thy music. I am listening to a PL 12-D right now, and it has a Pioneer PC 35 MM cartridge presently, and will have a Shure M75 based option soon in another headshell. Let us know how you like it.

I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks for the advice!

P.S. Is a more appropriate headshell worth it, or too small to notice the difference?

I had a Pioneer 550. The DL-110 was an excellent match.

I don't recall Pioneer using 'J-arms' on any of their turntables. It should be either a chrome S-arm, or a black straight arm (with an offset headshell).

Can you post pictures of your turntable?

S or J, it is a bent arm.
Put the DL-110 on and blow your mind.

ABORT THREAD - - - IT IS A PL518, NOT A PL330, I DONT KNOW HOW OR WHY I GOT THESE CONFUSED - - - ABORT THREAD

So, umm, please reevaluate your opinions on this cart...btw, I REALLY have appreciated the look of my PL518. I'm glad it's the one I got (from what I understand it's a good, but not super-high-end, turntable). The only downside is that it has no cover, and the replacements that are sold on eBay are about $100. That's an Ortofon Red right there.

No problem. The DL-110 will still sound good.

Same advice I gave you applies to the Pioneer PL-518. Yes, it should work well and be a good match for the tonearm.
