Has anyone here heard of Top Wing? Cartridge from Japan designed by the same guy responsible for the F9. Different price bracket altogether though...a little pricey for an MM. Even the replaceable stylus makes the SoundSmith Ruby OCL seem like a screaming bargain.

I have fleetingly awhile back but I just read this review of the 'Blue Dragon':

.....and as a Grace lover, I want one! :)

Thank you Steve. I have been thinking about this idea for a long time. It turned out that I thought not one))
I was stopped by the fact that this cartridge was created in order to get closer to the sound of the MC.
I want to add that there is not a single MC cartridge that wants to be close to MM ))
If anyone has prpimery inform, it will be very interesting to consider them.

... and 12,000 Euros for 2 air coils .... I have no words))

I bought one of the Soundsmith F-9 styli ( sapphire cantilever-nude line contact tip) - this is a fine replacement for this series of cartridges. I'm still really interested in the disassembly pics -like a lot of us - I use carts -but other than sound bite add copy construction "features" - not a lot of idea of what all is in there ? Pics have been a revelation.

Regarding the Soundsmith F-9 replacement stylus. They are very nice, but a bit high compliance at 25 μm/mN.

This isn't/wasn't listed on their web site, so I sent them an email asking. They were kind enough to send the following information:

Hi Jeffrey,

The compliance for all models is:

Compliance: 25 μm/mN (High compliance)

Best Regards,
Peter Green

Anybody have any idea how close to original OEM stylus 25 um/mn is ? F-9's come from a era when the SME series 3 reigned supreme and very low mass arms were the cat's meow (at least their specs said so-real world-maybe not). I have no problem believing Soundsmith - while I use a magnesium Technics 1200 arm -it also has a KAB fluid damper attached to it -so can work with a pretty wide variety of compliance's.

From what I have read, that is the original compliance of the F9.

Most of the F-9 styli are around 25 - but I believe the P stylus (a conical, IIRC) was significantly less - maybe around 15? Not sure about the ruby - that stylus/canti assy is so significantly different in construction I cannot imagine it would be in the same ballpark as the others.

Dennis - I'd definitely like the f-9 stylus to cast, and if you don't mind, I'd like to examine both the f-8 and f-14 styli - maybe do a teardown. Always wondered about the location of the magnet in the f-8 compared to the f-9. Man - that f-14 is rare as hens' teeth though. Never seen an opaque black one before - what tip did it have originally? PM me what you need for shipping.

Thanks!

Joe

You rock, Dennis! =D>

What are your recollections about how the the F-14 compared with the F-9? I've never heard the 14 before, but I know that the styli were supposed to be completely interchangeable.

Only when I'm in a chair...

From what I've been told the F14 was primarily used as a broadcast mainstay, i.e radio station use. The black clamp indicates it was a replacement stylus. Differences between a F14 and F9 was less coil winding and ofc wire :?: With regards to a F14 stylus being interchangeable with an F9, I don't think so...

But hey, you tell me  Isn't this what this endeavour of yours is all about?

Here's a link you might find interesting... I'm sure I've linked this before here on V.E.
