How many cartridges do you have?

Postby BMRR » 25 Oct 2015 22:10

There's a thread in the turntable forum called "How many turntables do you have?" so I thought it might be nice to have a similar thread over here in the cartridges forum. :)

I currently have the following:

  1. Audio-Technica AT3600L
  2. Audio-Technica AT95E
  3. Audio-Technica AT440MLb
  4. Audio-Technica DR350
  5. Audio-Technica AT3482P
  6. Audio-Technica AT211EP
  7. Grado Prestige Black1
  8. Grado ZF3
  9. Pickering XL-33U
  10. Pioneer PC-30
  11. Realistic [Shure] R25XT
  12. Realistic [Shure] R47XT
  13. Shure M44G
  14. Shure M44-7
  15. Technics P153S

I didn't realize I had so many until I wrote this list.

A few of these will be going away as I thin out my turntable fleet. The AT95E and AT440MLb will definitely be staying long-term, as they've both been wonderful and I can't imagine giving them up. The Pickering and Pioneer haven't had any play time yet; looking forward to trying them. The Grado Black will most likely stay too. It's been a very challenging cartridge but I'm determined to help it reach its full potential! The Technics will probably also stay, since these have suddenly gone up in value and many consider them very SAS-worthy. (Reminds me of a certain Seinfeld episode that fans of the show will remember!)

Cartridges I've had in the past but don't have anymore:

ADC 250XE (gave to a friend)
Audio-Technica AT3400 (gave to a friend)
Audio-Technica AT92E (included with a turntable I sold)
Ortofon FF10XE (gave to a friend)
Ortofon Omega (purchased new but it was defective; sent it back and got an AT95E instead)
Shure M35X (purchased new but it was defective; returned for refund)
Technics P24 (included with a turntable I sold; probably should've kept it)

Just four...

Ortofon Rondo Blue
Dynavector 10X5
Audio Technica AT-14SA
Audio Technica AT-13EA

It took some searching and a bit a luck but the AT's have NOS styli. The ATN-14 has about 100 hours on it and I just found an unopened ATN-13 that I am still breaking in. It is really starting to bloom now with about 25 hours on it.

Well, let's see...So far, there are these...

Ortofon FF 10XE (I got from a friend...I think he knows who he is... )
Shure M91ED (I love this one so much, I have two of them now!)
Shure M91E
Audio Technica AT 3600L (a conical for those thrift shop finds)
Audio Technica Lab Series LS-300 (I got that on my Dual 1226)
Shure M70EJ (came with the Philips GA427)
ADC Q321 (came with the Pioneer PL-12D II)
Pickering V15-AME3 (came with the Dual 1009F)
Pickering TL-3 (came on one of my Harman Kardon T25's)
Stanton (unknown) (came on the other T25)

I have an Astatic cartridge, I believe on the RCA...My "basement buddy" has been trying to dig out some various old styli he had packed away somewhere, as maybe I can use them for something...

So far, I've been happy...

I'm still on the fence about the AT95E and the AT 440mla, but I think one of them, at least, will be a future purchase...I have to put something on my list for Santa, too, you know! On the other hand, who knows what I might find on the next "junker" turntable??? :-k

Those 3600s are great to have around because they're so versatile. The stock stylus sounds surprisingly good, better than it has any right to, and there are so many other stylii you can put on it, including 3mil for 78s, ellipticals, hyperellipticals, and Shibatas. The same is true of the AT95E. The 4x7 elliptical that comes with the AT95E is, in my opinion, a great compromise between a conical and a sharper elliptical. In my experience it sounds noticeably better than a typical conical in regards to distortion and IGD, but is less revealing of surface noise than a 3x7 or 2x7 elliptical. Truly a versatile cartridge and stylus, and it has just as many stylus options as the 3600.

I agree on this one as well. The 3600 has been my all purpose cartridge for years, and never tried anything much higher quality than the AT95e (well, maybe a p mount Shure on clearance at radio shack years ago) until recently. I do prefer the older higher compliance conical styli, or JICO elliptical to the common newer low compliance ones though. The AT95e seemed nice as well, and a bit better quality (well matched coil resistance on my examples) but have not tried one on anything but a ATLP-120 so far for any length of time. I do now appreciate what a better quality elliptical like a DL 110 can do with a nice condition record, or how my AT 440mla can brighten up a worn sounding record now that I have finally tried a couple $100+ cartridges, but the 3600s still satisfy, and are still my only MM 78 choice.

By the way, I have 5- AT3600 (including one permanently mounted in cheap turntable), 2- AT95e, a Shure m75e, a AT120e fitted with a 440mla stylus, and a Denon DL110. There is also some Sanyo branded AT P mount, and various ceramics in my collection as well

Hmm, currently

Denon 102
Denon 103
Denon 103R
Denon 103Pro
Ortofon SPU GM Classic (Alnico)
Shure V15 III HE (x2)
ADC XLM II (x2)
Pickering 380 (x3)
Pickering XV15/625E (x4)
Pickering XL33U (x4)
Empire P888
Piezo YM308 IIX.

I think I need a few more MCs, higher up the tree maybe. Perhaps a Delos or something like a Miyajima. Or an Io?

Rega Carbon
ELAC STS 344
ADC...uh...indeterminate, probably XLM series, came with my Hitachi turntable in 1980
Ortofon FF15XE maybe...came with Pioneer turntable in early 80's

Is the AT95E a step up from the Rega, or am I better getting a aftermarket stylus for my beloved ELAC?
