Good morning,

My name is Patrick an I recently bought a Pioneer PL 518 in very good condition. :D

I am looking out for a new cartridge for this turntable as I am an audio enhausiast ...and already did some reading to come to this shortlist

AT95EN (or ML)
AT120E
VM530EN
Ortofon red 2M

But i am wondering if this wel be an improvement on my Empire EXL-10 cartridge... there is not a lot to find on this cartridge and in what class it is in.

Can you give any advice on this please?!

Welcome to VE !

The EXL-10 and EXL-20 are clones of the older 66/X and 66QE/X

(see Attachment for details of the 66/X and 66QE/X)

The following link is a BIG Empire thread !

Thanks for the clearing this up !

With this information I found Out that My cartridge was supplied with a spherical diamond from the former owner.
I ordered myself a eliptical one today as a treat, a Tonar 627.

Hope this wil improve the Quality A Little Bit and buy me some time to oriëntate for a newer and Better cart.

I have an EXL-10 cartridge . The stylus is original - ellips S-906E . I like its sound better than the sound of AT cartridges . Empire sounds more dynamic and deeper .

The original cartridge that came on the Pioneer PL 518 and 514 was the Empire/Pioneer CE2000E. Its a clone of the Empire 2000 III. A very good cartridge, and quite an upgrade from the 66/X, 66 Q/EX.

Taking that in account.... I did a LOT reading and came down to two things:

1) is my Phono input any good (no reference material) of the Advance Acoustic MAP-105, or should I look for a Rega Fono / Cambridge Audio / Pro-Ject phono pre-amp
Specs of tha AA MAP-150:
INPUT IMPEDANCE 100K ohms
INPUT IMPEDANCE PHONO 47K ohms/100 ohms
INPUT LEVEL PHONO MM/MC 2,5 / 0,2mV

2) and/ort buy a new cartridge to satisfy my hunger for more musical quality

AT VM95EN / VM530EN / VM450ML
Ortofon 2M blue or red
DL110
or even an Shure M97ED era IV for 125 euro's....

I tried my luck.... ordered an AT120eb and have no regreds. Indeed an upgrade! More detailed in mids and highs. More balanced, more musical.

Thanks for the advice
