Damaged AT15ss... *sigh* recs plz

Post by efrench4401 » 26 Jan 2020 18:40

My cart dropped onto the spinning platter edge of my Technics SL 1700mk2.

The cantilever used to appear very slightly angled in toward the center of the record but now looks angled toward the outside.

There’s no very obvious signs during playback, but I’m afraid to keep using it.

1) Can I have it repaired? Who should I use?
2) is it worth fixing? It had an unknown hours when I bought it in 2013 and I’ve used it since... difficult to estimate the hours, easily over 500. I love the balance of it so much.

3) if I were to buy another, even while repairing my old one, where should I look? The reviews on some of the dual MM AT carts in the 300-500 range seem good. I also don’t need to buy something too nice / overwhelming for my vintage setup (Technics aforementioned, Pioneer Sx780 and either Advent 3 bookshelf or PSB alpha bookshelf).

Sorry to hear, do you have a picture? AT15SS is hard to replace, and may repairable. Also you may be able to find NOS of other models, like AT20SLa, with only difference cantilever material. My choice, if the 15SS is completely broken.

The 740ML will not let you down, but some say the 540 is just as good or better for less money. I have only heard the 540. 540 is lighter as well, a factor for some arms. The SL1700mkII has eff. mass of 22g (with 9,5g headshell/6g cart). So even 540 is not so well suited, according to theory. But, your 15ss sounds good, and the VMN40ML has slightly lower compliance, so it may work fine as well.

If you'd like to keep your AT15 body but can live without the Shibata stylus, there are still OEM styli available such as the AT15E and AT15XE - both are nude, square shank ellipticals (3x7 I think - perhaps even 2x7).

It's also possible to have the cantilever/diamond replaced, but it won't be the original material (which I think was beryllium, which is NLA).

I had a slightly bent Be cantilever and I sent it to Dmitry (delta667) to get straightened. Apparantly Be can be persuaded with a gentle touch.

I bent an ATN150MLX once. I messed with it for a year or two then finally threw it in the trash. I just couldn't stand looking at it anymore. Some time later, months at least, if not a year, I was cleaning the garage and on the floor in the dirt under the bicycles I found the stylus. Somehow it managed to get out of the office trash bin and land on the floor as I was taking the trash out and there it lived for the longest time. On the dirty floor. Under the bicycles. I picked it up and looked at it. The cantilever was straight. You have to be kidding me, I thought. No way is there anything on the tip of the cantilever. I brought it into my office and checked with a loupe. Sure as heck the thing was intact. I cleaned the dirt off and put it in storage. I pulled it out a few months ago and mounted it on my AT150SA. It's been playing beautifully in my main system ever since.

Obviously the cantilever wasn't bent. The suspension apparently got stuck when the cartridge got bumped. Rolling a bike tire over it must have nudged it back into place.

Perhaps you should throw yours on your garage floor.

That's almost an insult to an AT-15. I'd compare it to putting regrooved tires on a Ferrari. I'd rather buy an inexpensive cart of some sort, and stash the AT-15 in a drawer until I could afford something to do it justice.

As always, just my opinion, YMMV.

Thank you for the informative and funny replies.

I will try to message that Dmitry gentleman and may go with that suggested 540 as a stop gap measure.

Thank you!

Is the cantilever bent or still straight? If it is straight and only pointing in the wrong direction it is very easy to fix your problem. One simply has to remove the cantilever assembly from the plastic holder and reinstall it again. The trick is to remove all pressure / preloading from the suspension rubber and let it relax. Afterwards it will be like new.

I retip my own carts and often cantilever need aligning ie a little tweak. VERY EASY TO CRUSH A CANTILEVER. Buy some watch repair tweezers and even glue some very thin soft material onto tips. Gently grab cantilever and a tiny adjust at a time realign, go slow.

**Gulp**

My hand eye coordination / fine motor skills would make it somewhat scary to try this.

For your entertainment, I’ll try to get a good pic and maybe try this. I have been thinking for a while that I need to eventually find the successor to this cart.. I clean it before every session and brush in between vinyls, but have no idea about total hours on the stylus.

All I know is the AT 15ss sounds amazing to me. Nothing out of balance. I’d love to find another cart with a similar profile for the future

How can I say it... brush. Cleaning fluids. More brush. Again. Pictures.
Seriously, taking the insert off and cleaning both generator and insert/cantilever/tip would be a good idea. Hard to tell if magnets are out of position and what is going on with all the dirt.
