Visiting Japan - cartridge / stylus bargains?

Post by scoran » 25 Jan 2020 19:01

Planning a trip to Japan (Osaka & Kyoto) and wondering if there are any cartridge / stylus bargains not to miss.

My tables / tonearms are--
* Dual 1229 (stock tonearm)
* Thorens TD 126 mk II with Sumiko MMT / TP-16 mkII tonearms

I'm looking for good values on moderately-priced carts - MM or MC, vintage or modern - $500 max per cart. Shure V15 type III is the best cart I currently have (wish I had more).

Anything being sold in Japan but not in the U.S.?

I'm not sure about that, scoran, but if you're going to Japan...You might want to check out any records that you can't find easily in the U.S. Obi strips are good, too...My wish list is filled with Japanese records that are simply unobtanium for the right price here in the U.S. and a few that haven't been reissued yet...I'm sure there may possibly be some good deals on styli, as well, but I'll wait for others to chime in on that...

Oh, you'd better believe I'm going record shopping. I cannot wait for that!

The Nag MP 500 is usually a lot cheaper in Japan, it is a great cart and MI

For an idea of what is available in Japan in the audio field try:
https://www.jauce.com/
Search for phono cartridges, turntables, amplifiers.
Or use brand names like Technics, SHURE, Ortofon etc.

Other ebay like sites in Japan:
https://www.whiterabbitexpress.com/blog/japanese-ebay/

Then for the onsite experience, there is the Akihabara district in Tokyo.

Many thanks for these tips. I've been checking Hifido in English, but there's not a lot of variety.

I won't make it to Tokyo this trip, but will hopefully get there another time.

Chris beat me too it by mentioning the Nagaoka carts.

I bought my MP500 from a seller in Japan and even with import duties and tax I saved a good chunk.

Japanese records also tend to be high quality so grab yourself what you can...

(Smacks forehead) Of course... makes perfect sense now. I've always tried to preserve obi strips when they came with recordings, I had no idea they actually enhanced value. Definitely planning to get Japanese pressings and hopefully strips to boot.

Great recommendation. I would definitely look at that cart at a lower price. Thanks!
