Audiotechnica AT LP 120 Replacement Needle?

Post by Mrs Ritchie Valens » 23 Jan 2020 15:37

Hey all,
I'm so so sorry for going MIA on everyone. But, I've just been very busy.
This topic is fairly straightforward.
I've had my audiotechnica turntable for, I'm guessing, a little over a year. (as it is now January) I would like to get a new needle for when the one it came with goes. I am looking to spend as little as possible as this will be the first time I am replacing it.
I saw a replacement needle on amazon for about $39, so like $40.00 really. I'm going to guess that there are cheaper needles on the market, yes? If so, will that give a lesser quallity in playback?
Thanks.

V-M Audio Enthusiasts sells the genuine original stylus for $26 (plus shipping, which is usually around $4); it is part # 216-DET on this page:

You are correct that there are cheaper generic versions available. Some of the cheap generics are pretty good, but the problem is that you don't always know whether you're getting a good or not-so-good one. Quality control is hit or miss. The Swiss-made generics, for example, have a defect rate of close to 50%. The defect rate for genuine Audio-Technica is 5% or less.

$30 is a small price to pay for a good sound quality and peace of mind. :)

Good info from BMRR, however with just a little over a years use, unless you play your(clean)records 3-4 hrs per day everyday then replacement seems somewhat early.
Although having a replacement on hand is a good thing.

I recently examined a number of styli by USB microscope
and was favorably impressed by consistently high quality of Audio Technica shape and finish
even for low end styli compared to less impressive quality from more expensive models by other manufacturers.

That one looks like the .4 x .7. Aren't the newer ones .3 x .7? LP Gear sells a nice CF95se stylus that is .3 x .7 with the Carbon cantilever for $49.https://www.lpgear.com/product/LPGCFN95SE.html

Yes they are, or at least, were.

$49.98 + $8.88 shipping = $58.86. I get the sense that Mrs. Ritchie Valens is trying to spend less money, not more.

Wow,
Thanks everyone.
I shop on amazon for the most part with ebay being every blue moon. Are there any good needles to come from off of Amazon?
Thanks.
Through out this past year with my Audiotechnica, there have been days where I'd play records more than other days. So, someone suggested that this might be to early for a replacement needle just yet?

If you prefer to shop on Amazon, my suggestion is to just get the genuine AT stylus. $35-$40 for the genuine article is not unreasonable.

Amazon has two generic versions available: one is a $16 no-name affair that almost certainly will not sound as good as the original; the other is the LPGear stylus mentioned by Boltman for $59.98, which I'm sure sounds great but is almost twice the price of the original, so that doesn't help you if you're trying to save money.

Since you mentioned eBay, I did find an eBay seller that has the genuine AT stylus for $29.99 and free shipping. I haven't purchased from this seller but they do have a 100% positive feedback rating and free returns:

The one I came across on amazon was $39 bucks, so like $40 if you think about it.
I may go with that one, but I might just wait cause there have been days where I've played it more than others.
I really don't know what to do.

The life on those needles is 300-500 hours. You can kind of estimate how many LP's you play per week. If the sound is becoming distorted or it is tracking/skipping more often, that's also a good reason to get a new one.
