Dual 505-2 cartridge replacement

Post by DimSpin » 20 Jan 2020 04:17

Hi
I just acquired a dual 505-2 and while I love it, it needs some love.
The cartridge is an shure m92e, I think it's faulty because I can only get mono signal out of the deck.
The cabling is good all the way up to the cartridge and I've changed the stylus.
What would be a good upgrade in terms of cartridges?
I'm aware this has been covered in other posts but I'm an absolute noob and was hoping to get a simple answer?
Thanks in advance

The Dual 505-2 has an ULM tonearm (Ultra Low Mass) so it therefore needs a cartridge with a high compliance design. Those are getting more and more rare on the market since most of the modern tonearm's are medium mass. Now, the Dual ULM and the Ortofon OM are a perfect match, they are made for each other. The Ortofon OM20 would be a great upgrade. Ortofon no longer sells the OM20 has a complete cartridge, only the stylus but the OM stylus all uses the same OM body. So get an Ortofon OM 1 or 5 and then get an OM 20 (or 10) stylus.

One thing to note here: There are several versions of the OM out there and partly conflicting information. The older OM10 - seen in the "historical products section" ( = discontinued products) at Ortofon-website - had a compliance of 25, but today's OM 10 stylus has a compliance of 20. Ortofon has changed the specifications during the years and lowered the compliance to make the OM's more workable with modern tonearms. So with today's OM10 stylus, the Ortofon OM body should be used with the 2,5g extra weight that is included with every OM body. (It slots in at the top of the cartridge) for optimum performance, it was not needed when the compliance was 25.

Thanks
I managed to get a second hand 510 mk2 which sounds pretty nice.
No idea of the compliance or if it needs extra weight.
But at least I have 2 channels working now which is fun.
Thanks for the advice.
