Best way to use a stylus cleaner with a Technics SL-QL1

Post by apastuszak » 20 Jan 2020 02:12

For those that don't know, the Technics SL-QL1 is a p-mount linear tracking turntable, with the tone arm built into the dust cover. For my other turntables, I use a Magic Eraser to clean the stylus and just lower it and raise it using the queuing level. Well, on a linear tracking turntable, I can't do this. I've been locking the tone arm and pushing the magic eraser against the stylus with the lid open.

I can't think of any other way to do it on this turntable.

Ideas, opinions? I've been thinking about getting an Onzow Zerodust, but I don't see how I could use that without using the same method.

I use AT607 stylus cleaner with my SL-QL15. I've also used it with the SL-L3, the QL1, the SL5 and the OEM Grundig PS 6000. Works great.

I've got an SL-10 and I use MoonGel like you are using Magic Eraser.
Moon Gel is a drum head dampener very similar to Onzow but much cheaper. I bought it at Guitar Center.
I put the gel pad in a clear plastic stylus box.
Just be gentle with enough pressure to plunge the diamond and not the whole cantilever.

I bought some MoonGel at Sam Ash. It worked like a charm! The stylus is nice and clean now.

My only concern is the color. Since it's blue, I can't really tell where I dropped the needle before, or see if it's dirty and needs cleaning. But the moongel took off stuff the magic eraser would not. And it was only $8.00 at Sam Ash.

I have been using Magic Eraser with good effect on a couple of linear trackers I have. After reading the enthusiastic endorsements here, I think I will be checking out Moon Gel myself. 8)

One Moon Gel pad fits perfectly in a Listerine Breath Strip pack.
