Stylus just went out?

Post by Mikecl » 08 Dec 2019 02:53

It was fine about an hour ago but I went to play a album and all I get was this creepy sound from some horror movie like being underwater I could hardly hear anything at all.

Tried another album and same thing

Have you checked to see if you still have a stylus tip?

You might want to invest in some sort of record cleaning device. Playing dirty records will always result in the stylus tip collecting crud.

If you didn't still have a tip the arm would likely just go skating across the record. :o

I know, I've been there.

They need, at least, to be brushed with a carbon fiber brush before play to remove dust.

Many of us do a complete wet clean and replacement of inner sleeve on brand new discs. Some contamination may have gotten on the LP during handling after manufacture. The only way you can be sure a record is clean is if you have cleaned it.

+1 on the above... I know this will sound like an exageration, but some of the dirtiest records I've ever spun were brand new... YMMV....

+1 new does not mean clean. Vacuum based RCM is a fantastic investment.
