Noob needing help and advice please.

Post by Psymon » 05 Dec 2019 14:50

Hi, I've just been given a Systemdek IIX 900 turntable, but unfortunately the 1st time I used it the needle fell off !
As you can see from the attached picture it's a "MP11" cartridge so I'm looking for an affordable replacement. And by affordable I really mean affordable - I have serious money constraints until the new year. Whatever I buy now will be replaced at the end of January by a better option.
When it did briefly work the sound was very quiet, but I want to try the player with a new stylus before investing in a preamp.
Any help regarding cheap but good quality MP11 replacements would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

A MP11 replacement stylus is not cheap.
If you want a temporary solution, I suggest you to buy one of those very cheap but very well regarded AT3600 :

I didn't look further but I think you can even find cheaper sellers.
Many people on this forum claim that the price of this cartridge doesn't reflect it's musical qualities.

Thank you for that suggestion. Have found one with next day delivery at a very reasonable price from a certain online retailer.
I'm hoping the new stylus will increase the volume as it was ridiculously quiet before (possibly due to the age and damage of the MP11 ?) otherwise i'll need to invest in a pre-amp as well.
I'm running the Systemdek to a Denon PMA-500AE integrated amplifier and a pair of Monitor Audio BR5's with ixos pro audio cables so either the turntable needs a good service, it needs a pre-amp or it was the stylus causing such low output.
Obviously I won't know if I'm going to need a new belt until I can hear any music and detect any issues, but they seem readily available online.

You say the sound was very quiet. Shouldn't be, if you plugged it in to the phono input.

It is plugged into phono input, but I'm putting the quiet sound down to the damaged stylus. Cd player has no sound issues. Replacement stylus is due for delivery tomorrow so I'll soon find out.

I think you should be fine with the AT3600.
AND should you wish to upgrade the stylus some time, the following is a good option:

You should look at replacing the stylus for the MP-11 down the track:

You have a decent Nagaoka cartridge with the MP-11.

All the current range of Nagaoka styli will fit the MP11 body (I have the MP11 Boron.version). The JN-P110 is the type recommended by Nagaoka for the MP11 (it’s the MP-110 stylus).

However the JN-P200 stylus (from the MP-200) will also fit and give a huge upgrade so perhaps keep the body and wait until you have the funds for this as your next upgrade.

There are also a number of 78 styli available to fit the MP11 body if this is your thing.

I have a 110, 200, 11B, 30 styli and all work well in my 11B body (but my 11B styli retipped with a Paratrace is a bit special).

Thank you everyone for your advice. I shall certainly look to replace the cheap temporary stylus as soon as possible, but for now I can at least listen to my vinyl while I do some further research into my options.
