help with Ortofon 2m red

Post by giobenelab » 05 Dec 2019 13:02

Hi everyone,
I need some expert advice for a ortofon 2m red cartidge: last night me and my wife bought a Project Debut Carbon which sports aforementioned cartridge. Because the plastic guard is a complete nightmare to remove and put back on, while putting it back on to protect the cartridge, it accidentally slipped forward bending the cantilever backwards (seeing it from the side)   so annoyed. I somehow managed to return it forward but now the VTA is much bigge than 20 degrees, and so the diamond stylus at the end is no longer vertical. I am attaching some pics.

How can I solve the problem?
the vinyl still play ok, I am more concerned about the long term damage in terms of pressure on the cantilever and stylus etc than on the quality of sound.

Disclaimer: I don't understand much of stylus, cantilever etc... I love vinyls and alwyas played them on an old Project debut that I had for 10 years before it died a week ago, so apologies if my explanation is not that clear...

please anyone help??
thanks a million in advance

Firstly, to fit the stylus guard gently press the clip at the rear of the guard and ease it up over the stylus from below. It becomes second nature after a bit of practice. Once in place release the clip and it will grip. I'm afraid the stylus damage won't be fixable so I would bite the bullet and buy a new stylus. I certainly wouldn't use it in that state, much sympathy!

"I certainly wouldn't use it in that state, much sympathy".... #-o :( :( that is for sure something I didn't want to hear.

Is it because it would damage the vinyls?

Hi,
Stylus is completly damaged. Don´t use it on your beloved vinyl or it will be damaged too!
Never mind the 2M Red stylus. Get a new 2M blue stylus as an upgrade, you won´t regrett.

Agree.

Whilst many like their 2M Red, it seems to have mixed reviews.
(You are probably looking at ~2x the price for a blue stylus vs the red.)

Sadly you have had an unfortunate accident and the stylus is damaged, no point in risking your records so throw it away and buy a new one. Felix is right, if your funds will stretch a 2M blue is sweeter and more full bodied than the Red.

oh well...I think I get the message :( :( :( :(
While I try to get some cash for a new stylus, I had an idea: at home I have also a 10 year old Projest Debut with a different (not much used) cartridge, see this picture(not the best one, I know..sorry), would it be possible to replace my damaged one with this? Would it work in terms of counter weighting, VTA, wiring, screws, etc...? or for some reasons this would be a crap idea?

thanks a lot in advance

That looks like am OM5E or possibly an OM10. It is a MM cartridge like the 2M Red so yes you can use it in it's place. The cartridge weight and tracking weight will most likely be different, so once you have it attached to the arm you will have to go through the set up process again. One point.. the 2M Red body is threaded which makes attaching to the headshell easier. The OM models need a nut and bolt to do this.

a guy in another forum was suggesting to replace only the stylus part, would that work?

No I definitely wouldn't recommend it, either change the whole cartridge or buy a new stylus.

Hi,
your other system is an Ortofon OM. The stylus will also fit the 2M body. You just have to re-balance the tonearm and set the tracking force to about 1.5g.

Cheers Felix

Yes it will fit I read. Check it out!! As others stated, re- balance the tracking force. The stylus slips off the OM body but do it carefully. My OM body is tight with the stylus and one slip and another damaged stylus.

It's not a plug-in fit, you need to be careful so that the stylus and cantilever is properly positioned. A pair of tweezers will help. And it will look a bit odd :), but it will work.
