Luxman PD291 Cartridge replacement

Post by BigAlMusic16 » 03 Dec 2019 05:21

I have had my Luxman since new 1980's and has served me well. But for many years with CD's BD's etc sadly I drifted away from vinyl, but kept my 1000+ collection and I am now really getting into it once again. I also have bought a REGA Planar 3 with Exact Cart but I still favour my Luxman which is still working fine but still old cart. My issue is upgrading the original PD291 cart - I think it was a Pickering used - no name is visible so cant be sure but straight fixed arm and headshell so major job to replace and realign with no VTA if cart bigger. Thinking maybe Orotofon Blue?
Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated thanks Vinyl lovers.

The audio-technica VM95 series may give more styli options down the track:
conical/elliptical/nude elliptical/microline/shibata
https://www.audio-technica.com/cms/news ... index.html
Further, the ATs are likely to be less expensive

With the Ortofon you are limited: Red to Blue OR Bronze to Black.
Whilst styli are physically interchangeable across the 4 carts, it is not recommended.

The service manual for your Luxman PD 291 can be found here:

If you post a picture of the cartridge someone will likely be able to identify it. There may be some very good stylus options to refresh your setup without changing cartridges.

Thanks Collux and spensar - advice much appreciated.

AT Cart info is most informative - and photos attached to try and identify the cart. Cheers

First time at this so hope dowloaded correctly. Being disabled its hard to get good photos but did my best.

I thought that was a light weight tonearm which suits high compliance cartridges.

I think the Ortofon OM or 2M range will suit much better than AT VM series.

Looks like a Grace F8 cartridge. Commonly fitted to Luxman turntables.
- high compliance.

This tonearm needs a high compliance cartridge. Ortofon is a better choice on this tonearm. Ortofon stylus do cost more than AT, but those AT stylus just don't suit this tonearm without adding a weight, which will affect VTA which the OP doesn't want.

I think it was intended: ..........AT VM95 series

The AT VM series should be suitable, having a higher compliance.

Thanks for all your good advice.
Looking at HiViNyws reviews - he rates Nagaoka MP-110H very highly as good as Ortofon Blue at much less cost.
If it is warm sound but with depth and good separation would suit me as Rega is very precise across the baord and wide range so give both options.
Your thoughts appreciated
