Ortofon stylus 40 no more?

Post by sotpal » 22 Nov 2019 19:14

I was checking Ortofon website today and noticed that Stylus 40 is not listed anymore
(please see attached image)

Are you aware of any announcement made by Ortofon about stopping production of the OM 40 Stylus?
I'm almost sure a month or a month and a half ago when I last checked Ortofon site specifically for stylus 30 and 40,
40 was there with pricing and everything...

As the 40 is about €50 discounted at the moment I suspect they are running down stock.

I think AT has taken most of Ortofon's sales and they're trying to get some cashflow.

In answer to the thread title - I don't think so:

http://www.ortofon.com/stylus-40-p-374-n-3384 and http://www.ortofon.com/stylus-540-mkii-p-387-n-3384

Although the OM40 stylus, unlike the 540 MkII, is not listed for purchase on the Ortofon site, it is in stock at the UK importer, Henley Audio https://www.henleyaudio.co.uk/products/ ... BrandIds=1 at a fairly chunky £290.

I'm not sure what was happening in the screenshot, but I know from experience at my place of work (a publisher) how easy it is for something like this to happen. It only needs a small error in a database for a book that's actually available to disappear from a site, or alternatively for it to be available to order when it's a year away from release!

Maybe awaiting another production batch? It's odd that they haven't removed it altogether if it's discontinued. They also seem to be keen to promote the upper-range OM styli as upgrades for the re-released OM 5E Super (announced in May). BTW, I haven't seen any announcements about the Stylus 40 in the Ortofon newsletter I receive, so this discussion feels a bit speculative at the moment

Maybe but why then is it being discounted?

Ah, I haven't seen those listings. I only really follow UK pricing: of course, Henley keeps a tight rein on this, so the price of a Stylus 40 at most retailers tends to be the same as on their site.

reference to the Stylus 40 is to be found in the new release for the OM5 series.

That release is undated. The changes to the ortofon website are in the last 6 weeks. I'd love to be wrong but as the stylus 40 is being advertised at only £20 more than the 30 it feels like a running down of stock. I would get another but I can't justify any more hoarding.

Thank you guys for your input. I have ordered a 40 from a reseller for now.
Discounted price as said above.

Actually $250 from the known bay, brand new in original box (asked the seller twice to confirm about that).
Well, that's a steal.. let's see what I get..
