Replacement Cartridge for Rega Planar 3

Post by Nckch » 15 Nov 2019 19:21

Hi Folks

I want to replace my Elys 2 on my Planar 3 (2016 model)

I am not really in love with the Elys 2 because of the IGD

I cannot afford the Exact so I looking at an AT VM95ML or VM95SH

Two questions

Can anyone give me an idea of the life expectancy of the ML vs the SH

Second question is can the AT be mounted on the Rega without having to shim the arm height, I am sure I have read somewhere it is not necessary but would like some advice before I go ahead

Update the AT site gives estimates of life, 800 hours for SH and 1000 hours for ML

So if anyone can advise on the mounting that would be very helpful

I've used AT carts on Rega turntables and never had to shim them. I wouldn't worry about it though. If you buy a cart and it needs height then adding a shim is cheap and easy to do.

Thanks for that, I have been told that the phono input on my Brio amp has capacitance too high for the AT cartridge and I should connect via a pre-amp with capacitance of 100 i don’t doubt this is technically correct but will it make a noticeable difference in sound?

I don't know but it doesn't sound right to me. All MM carts I've ever used are happy to work into any standard MM input. I can't see Rega making an amplifier that would be incompatible with carts from one of the largest manufacturers in the world! That would be pretty stupid.

They are making an assumption about the cable capacitance, which often can be as much as the preamp input. Recommended total load for that cart is 100 to 200pf, so I don't think there will be a problem.

Go for the ML instead of the Shibata. You will like the VM95, it is a great cartridge.

If I fit the VM95ml myself which protractor should I use, the Rega one or something else?

I've messed around with different alignments on a Rega arm and you know what? The Rega alignment is fine.

I always use a standard 2 point protractor. They work no matter what the arm length and distance to pivot. The ML will work fine on any of the standard alignments.

If you play records, like classical, which have crescendos near the end of a side, and/or very "full" records (grooves fill the side near to the label), I would use Stevenson alignment to minimise error near the eand of a side.

Hi everyone so I but the bullet and ordered the VM95ML fitted the cartridge, set up the alignment best I can, set the tracking force at the nominal 2g and at the moment anti skate at around 1.5 on the P3 scale.

Listening to Brothers in Arms half speed mastered version, sounds awesome

The only question is what is the correct ani skate setting as I cannot find any mention in the AT specifications

Thanks to everyone for the advice, the AT95ML is such a dramatic improvement over the Elys 2 I am really chuffed.

I have not done anything about raising the tone arm but it looks good to me and can’t fault the sound, so much detail I would recommend to anyone
