Nag MP-110 vs AT 120eb

Post by Boltman92124 » 11 Nov 2019 21:08

Hi folks,

A little new cartridge money burning a hole in my pocket! Thinking about the Nag MP-110. I currently listen to the AT 120eb and Denon 103 primarily. My Denon is getting old though. The MP-150 is more than I want to spend but have never tried a Nagaoka before. Anybody have both the 120eb and Nag 110 for some feedback?

Thanks!!

I have the MP-110, and actually, to my ear and in my system, I enjoy the AT-100e more - wider and flatter frequency response, better separation, good tracker, but maybe not quite as good at mitigating surface noise. It has a .3 x .7 bonded stylus, compared to the .4 x .7 bonded stylus on the MP-110. The modern equivalent of the AT-100e is the AT-VM540EB, which sells for about the same cost as the MP-110.

Good to know. I have the 100e also along with the 120eb. Love them both.

BTW, a new stylus is still available for the 100 here, for modest espense:

https://www.lpgear.com/product/ATN100E.html

And a new stylus for your AT-120eb here, for not too much more:

https://www.lpgear.com/product/ATN120Eb.html

And as for the Nagaoka line, I have not heard the MP-150, but I have the MP-200, and it's head and shoulders above the MP-110.

Thanks. Yeah, the 120eb stylus is a steal for $70. Only nude elliptical I can think of that cheap. I wanted to check out the Nag "house sound" though. I read they are warmer sounding than the AT's and have a nice "in the room" presence. The 150 and 200 get real expensive real fast compared to the 110 for sure. Or even the MP-100 and then add a 110 stylus for only $65 more? That combo is only $25 more than a MP-110 alone and get 2 cartridges out of the deal.

If, as I assume, you like the Audio Technica house sound, you may not care for the lower-level Nagaokas. You are accustomed to excellent detail and "air," and the 110 simply doesn't have that. The 200 does (because of the boron cantilever and nude stylus, I presume), and has a touch more warmth than ATs, but you are getting into more expensive territory.

If you like the AT sound, but your stereo funds are limited, I highly recommend the AT-VM95ML. Your 4-coil design in the AT-120eb may get slightly better stereo separation, but the 2-coil design of the VM95, plus the Microline stylus, produces excellent flat frequency response, very good stereo separation, superb tracking, excellent detail, and fast transitional response. It's a great deal.

Thanks Johnny. I think I'm gonna pass on the Nag. No more bonded ellipticals. Save up a little more and try the 95ML. Thanks!
