Ray Parkhurst has done a couple of threads on here with a guide for what you need to buy.
viewtopic.php?t=92996 is a good starter.

At a minimum, a 30X magnifier and a flashlight can be useful. If you catch a flash of light reflected from a flat spot on the side of the tip, that is an indication of wear.
There are USB microscopes that are not expensive, and can be useful.
Ray Parkhurst is an expert.
Cheers,
Alec

Re: Inspecting a stylus microscopically
I have one of these available from many e-Bay dealers world wide .
The 60x is good for viewing a stylus to see if it is clean or not.
The 30x is useful to view a stylus to set the SRA...etc
Unfortunately, such things can not show wear.

I think for wear analysis you need at least 200x, and prefably a long focal lenght.
And of course a flexible licht to lit the stylus from all sides
