Headshell for Acutex LPM 415

Post by Voxbo » 24 Oct 2019 22:01

Hi, I'm looking at using the Acutex LPM 415 on my Dual 1249. I got a used headshell off a Reference 510T (CEC DD-8200) which originally had a Shure Presence 8 cartridge (pics).

The height seems to be off and I'll need to get some nuts to hold the screws in place. Do I need to get some other kind of headshell for the Acutex?

Thanks!

That looks like the cartridge I bid on last week on eBay.

Don’t most Duals have a sled under the headshell?

That headshell won't work on your Dual. The appropriate shell (or sled) would be the TK-24 or TK-120, fairly readily available.

Thanks @wolfie62 and @denvertrakker. It looks like I need to get a used TK-24 headshell in order for this to work. These Duals are pretty complicated. Do you know how does one remove the headshell? The service manual is in german and it looks like you need to use unscrew the headshell from below. The headshell itself does not move much so this is going to be a challenge :(

FYI. for anyone else looking for something similar. I found @rorenoren's response from 2012 on how to change the cartridge on a Dual - I'm trying to figure out how to move the fingerlift to the back:
Hi,

get the manual of any Dual turntable with similar headshell.
(all 12xx models)

It is easy to remove the "sub- headshell". (called "TK")
Move the fingerlift to the back and you can take off the "sub" by pulling it down at its frontside. (usually it comes off without help)
To fix it again, tilt the "sub" back up and insert it under the headshell.
Then lift up the front until it is in its position and move the fingerlift back to the front.

The cartridge itself may be both clipped an screw- mounted.
Use a screwdriver (-) to unlock the plastic clips.
(remove screws before, if installed)

Regards, Jens

Used OEM sleds are still rather expensive; you can be a NEW 3D-printed one from Pat's Audio for $25 on ebay.

AFAIK, the fingerlift has no locking screw like later Duals - you just push the outside end of the lift towards the back and the cart/sled should fall off on its own.

Thanks! Am going to try this out when I get home. I found another thread where @dualcan has provided scans of the mounting procedure here:

Quick update. The sled's a brilliant idea. I removed it easily and switched out the Acutex.

I'll order one of the sleds off ebay. Is the cartridge alignment tool worth picking up?

Thanks for the suggestions!

Download the free cartridge alignment protractor from VE, and print it to size. It's just as good as the expensive ones.
