Replacement for Shure N97xe in UK

Post by lewisb » 17 Oct 2019 13:50

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. After a replacement for the now discontinued N97xe Shure stylus. Aware of the Jico replacements which seem well received, but buying in the UK seems like a minefield. Bought the cartridge and stylus two years back for £80, the styli (if you can find them) alone cost more than that! Due to budget, not looking for an upgrade.

I'm wondering if Thakker are the only game in town: https://www.thakker.eu/en/replacement-s ... s/a-9536/

Advice appreciated!

Cheers,

Ben

Thanks so much Collux. Do you have any experience of these? The €39 vs €89 for example?

Given the cost of the Jico at Thakker I personally would buy a cheap generic so I had something to play whilst sending off the Shure original to ESCo and have a Paratrace tip fitted. Assuming the styli is OK then it would probably be <£100 and end up somewhere between a HE and a Microridged/SAS version. They also do a special elliptical (still nude) that would probably be <£80.

Less than £80 sounds good! I see Mantra have a replacement for £79

Worth considering?

I don't have the M97xE sorry. I have some other SHURE models.

VoM is another respected supplier, based in the US.

If you scroll down this page there are audio samples of the 97 with the standard stylus, with a Jico SAS stylus and also Paratraced stylus for comparison (not my site but useful!).

I would search the web for "Vivid Line", to see where you can get it in the UK.
This is an LP-Gear / LP-Tunes special, and runs around 80 to 120 Dollars.
Note that the NDC stylus will fit ANY Shure, with exception of ML120/140 series, and that damned V15 (either II or IV or something) model that had a smaller square pipe for some reason.

If you search either for "Shure Vivid Line" you'll be surprised what you find!
I have NOT personally tried one yet, but the Youtube samples of an old Pickering and something else sound extremely promising and blow away the comparison cart at about twice the price!

I hear great things about the Shure Vivid from LP Gear, and it's less than the JICO.

Brilliant, thanks all, loads to be getting on with there! Still tempted to try the Esco route, unless I find a UK outlet for the Vivid Lines

You just want a stock 97xe styli replacement?

I upgraded to the JICO at some point years and years ago, even though the stock one wasn't worn out, and I'm sure I have the original lying around somewhere. I'd be willing to post it to you because I imagine when the JICO gets old I'll just upgrade to something else.

Let me know, I'll put it in an envelope with some stamps.

I found it. PM me your address and I'll mail it to you free of charge. Might take a week or two from Canada.
