Load and gain settings. Completely lost.

Post by Mw713 » 17 Oct 2019 00:46

it’s my first moving coil cartridge which is a Hannah SL. My turntable is a Luxman 171A and phono preamp is a Sutherland 20/20. Suggested load in Peariant for the cartridge is 400 homes. Options on the Sutherland is 100 ohms, 200 ohms, 475 ohms, 1K ohms, 47K ohms. I assume 475 ohms is the closest to the suggested load. completely lost on the gain settings. Any help would be appreciated. This is is all new to me. Please let me know if there’s any important information that I have left out. Thank you in advance.

Generally, for best signal to noise levels, gain should be set so that your main volume control should be at about 2 to 3 o'clock at the very loudest levels you plan on listening to music at it's loudest levels.

Ok I started out at highest gain setting and I can’t go past 11 - 12. I’ll drop it down. Thanks

Start with 52dB, if it's not loud enough, you can try 58 (seems that the optimal value for this cartridge output is around 56dB).
The suggested load is at least 400Ω, so you should be fine with 475.

Thanks, that's where I'm at now.
