What to do with these Supex's?

Post by _tedd » 16 Oct 2019 06:41

Hi gang,

I've been collecting some old gear lately to try and build myself a nicer TT than my AT120. So far I've got two Supex SD900's and one Supex 900 mkIV, along with some old Ortofon/Grado/B&O etc. From what I've read so far I believe the Supex are much better carts than the others I've got but I'm not sure which to get re-tipped. None of them have a cantilever still attached. One of the SD900's looks better than the other and the mkIV definitely looks the best. Is there an obvious choice here?

As for arms, so far I've got a Formula IV and SME 9003 (series 2, detachable headshell) but I'm not married to either of them if they're not compliant and will sell off whatever I don't use in order to get an arm that suits. Tables are Thorens TD125 mkII and TD160 mkII (I'll likely sell the latter).

Thanks!

Also not sure if this is relevant or not, but my phono is a Project Tube Box DS2 and I listen to mostly rockier stuff.

Hi,

First off nice haul. The supex are loved by many. I have not experienced them personally I have to say. The SME3009 would be a better match IMO. If it were me I would send them all to the rebuilder of choice and get them to pick the one that will give the best restoration. Not sure who does that but I have used Dmitry (delta667 on here) and had great service. Garrot are probably closest to you but I have not used them.

Can you list the other cartridges you have? You may have some gems there as well.

I had a Supex for years, I think it was a 900.

It was great, well worth restoring.

Thanks for the replies! Is there much difference between the SD900 and 900mkIV? If not, the mkIV is definitely in better cosmetic condition at least.

I was under the impression the SME might be better suited to a MM cartridge, is that less of a worry than I thought?

The other carts I've got are a B&O MMC 20e (with stylus and still in original packaging, though used), Grado GT, Ortofon 2m Blue (on my Audio-Technica), another older Ortofon that I've forgotten the model of, a Rega Elys 2 (unused), AT95 (I think? Came with the LP120) and a couple of OM10's.

I believe, but could be wrong, that the MKIV was the best, but that my just be the cantilever. Picking the one that looks nicest is not a bad way to start.

The SII with detachable headshell is heavy enough for most MCs so no worry there.

MMC20e is a very good cartridge so don't write that one off. Possibly the best of the MMs you have. I like the OM series as well.

The older Ortofon that I'd forgotten was a Concorde, still has a stylus on it. I'm not against getting a newer cart either like a 2m Black maybe if compliance is an issue with the Supex. Is there any way to figure that out without paying $400 for a retip?

If its an LM series concorde that's not a bad cartridge at all. Got a picture of it?

I really would not worry about the compliance. That Supex will work nicely on your SME.

My mistake, it's not a Concorde at all, but an LM 30. Looks like the newer OM10's. I need to get one of those 3009 RCA adapters so I can actually listen to the thing!

I got an old Supex 900 super retipped with an ali cantilever and a paratrace from Expert Stylus. Sounds amazing on a Sme 3009 with a heavy headshell going into a transformer. Ortofon Black, pffff, it's 'ok'. The Supex is powerful and lush.

To be fair Supex and Orotofon black are fairly far apart in presentation. It's rare for someone to like both.

Tonight I decided to work out once and for all what my 3009 in - looks like an S2 Improved, which I'm lead to believe is actually the least desirable model? Will this still be okay with the Supex?

It'll be fine, there is a lot of angst over some of the SMEs. but all of them can be made to work well.

I agree with Bill's statement. SME, very flexible tonearms, the removeable headshell versions. BTW I didn't mean to imply the Ortofon Black was bad, it isn't but my Supex is in another league as far as I am concerned. But then, I like the Nagaoka MP200 more than the Black.
