What should the tracking be set to this Shure Stylus?

Post by Joeystarr55 » 15 Oct 2019 19:53

I bought this Shure M91ED cartridge with N91ED stylus off of e-bay. I was checking what the tracking should be? I took it to the audio store and they said the stylus looked good. I forgot to ask what the tracking should be? It looks like there is a lot of different type Shure N91ED stylus? Thanks in advance.

The stylus that is currently on your M91ED cartridge is not an N91ED stylus; it's actually an N44-7 stylus. The correct tracking force for that stylus is 3 grams.

And on that M91ED body the VTA will be way off. Different platform. Get a M91 or M75 compatible stylus for your cartridge.

When I tried it on my turntable, it played fine, but it skipped across the record when it was done. Now I know the tracking was set to low.
Thanks

M-44 is 15 degrees, M 91 ED is 20 degrees. Only way to fix this one is get the correct stylus. Your stylus is the wrong one for your cartridge.

@Joeystarr55: From your photos, it looks like the cartridge is twisted off-centre in the headshell as well... try to line it up so that it is in a straight line, front-to-back with the headshell plug-in part.
Use a protractor which you can download and print (full-size) from this website, to move it forward, or back in the headshell to get the correct stylus alignment points.
With many Shure cartridge bodies, a variety of styli from other models are compatible, but will need the overhang alignment adjusting for each type.... That's the beauty of many of those older Shure cartridges:- they can take many other versions of a stylus for different Shure cartridge bodies with little to no problem, and they can change the sound output significantly. With your M91 body, you can use styli from the M75/76/44, etc..... most that use the rectangular body shape.
Others like the M95/97/V-15 style which use a different body shape won't fit without some major cutting-down of the plastic stylus mount....

I thought it looked off center. The cartridge that’s on my turntable now is an ADC QLM 30 MK III that came with my Kenwood KD 2000 it doesn’t sound bad, but I thought the Shure would sound better. I will try to center the stylus and check the alignment. Thanks

Your cantilever is obviously canted to port in the head on and above shots. If you are ok with that, fine. But it would keep me up at nights, just OCD like that.

I decided to use my almost new Audio Technica cartridge & 3600 stylus that I bought for my other turntable till I can find the right stylus for my Shure M91ED cartridge.

The Jico n91ed is a high quality replacement. I’m running one on a Garrard turntable and it sounds excellent. I purchased it at lptunes.

The tracking force recommendation (0.75-1.5g) is found here in the SHURE literature downloads.
