The 2M Red is the worst entry level cartridge I've ever heard - nasty and sibilant. So I wouldn't recommend that one. The new VM95 series is good provided you can get the capacitance loading right at the phono preamp and your internal TT cabling. I have both the "C" model and the "ML" model. The EN model would be somewhere in between those. You can upgrade or downgrade the stylus when the EN stylus wears out.

I've not heard the 2M Red myself, but am unimaginably impressed with the two VM95 series cartridges I've been mucking about with recently. I've got both the EN and SH variants and have to say that I consider them both extraordinary value for money.

As noted above, they need a decent phono stage and genuine low-capacitance cabling; under those conditions I'm not certain they can be bettered for the money.

I like the 2M Red. Yes, it's a bit rough at the top but not unduly. I have not heard the new VM95 but in my opinion the Red is better than the old 95e. And you can upgrade the stylus.

Saying that, the older 510 MkII is better.

Full disclosure: I'm a huge AT fan, Ortofon not so much.

That said, what are you looking to upgrade FROM? What do you like and dislike about your current cart?

For the 2M series, there seems to be about many who dislike them as think they're terrific. I'd have the AT in a heartbeat.

As always, just my opinion, YMMV.

Colin,
I like the '95e even to the point of having one kicking around for sentimental reasons. I reckon the new VM95 series are a step ahead across the board. I'm listening to the SH version as I type - it's just into its third hour of running time...
I fear you might be right about the Ortofons as well, I had a VMS20 on my first turntable and that thing could rock. As with the '95e, it wasn't really 'hi-fi' but was a lot of fun!

I don't think Ortofon carts have gotten better. The VMS20e MkII is one of my favorites but to be honest, I think it's hard to buy a bad cartridge these days. I don't think it makes much sense to talk about better or worse. It's really just about system matching and what sort of sound you like. Both Ortofon and Audio Technica make good carts, it just depends on what you want. Both of my turntables have Ortofon carts on them just now but I've spent many a year using AT ones. Used AT more than any other brand.

My TT has an ED M195 cart on it now & it sounds good but not great. I tried an aftermarket stylus replacement but it's not quite right , not sure why. I'm running through and old Sansui 5050 receiver that I love the warm sound of. Just getting back into vinyl after a long hiatus...

That's a Shure cartridge. I'm not sure( no pun intended) if it came with the TT when new.

Audio Technic is a real example that cheaper can sometimes be better.
But vinyl stuff is always a matter of personal taste and there isn't such thing as right or wrong, regarding choice of cartridge.

In another thread I posted my review of the Ortofon 2M Red. I was very very impressed with it. For a 100.00 cart it's one of the best bangs for the buck you can get in my opinion. It was set up in my friend's Dual 604 turntable and I listened to it and compared it to my Denon DL-110 cart which cost 3 times as much. While my Denon was the better tracker, the 2M Red more than held it's own sound wise.....which is amazing given it's price.

The highs are not harsh, but very detailed, just like the DL-110. I have the Denon DL-110 on my Thorens TD-145 and believe me, if I had the 2M Red on there, I would be just as happy listening to that. I was so impressed with the Ortofon that I am seriously considering getting an Ortofon 2M Bronze for my Thorens once I get a 2nd headshell (and maybe a 3rd if I want to start going down the cartridge rabbit hole).

Don't get me wrong....I'm not saying the 2M Red is the total equal of the DL-110. It's not. But it comes so close that I would be happy with either cart on my deck.
