Dual 506 Cartridge Advice

Post by Fisch1 » 12 Oct 2019 18:23

I posted this question on the Dual forum no one has answered. This is probably where it should of went. Picked up this turntable recently. It has a Sanyo MG 28 cartridge with a newer stylus.Looking to upgrade the cartridge. I’m a little overwhelmed by this I haven’t had a turntable in probably 35 years. I have been reading a lot on the forums here. I will be using a Marantz PM 6006 Integrated Amp and using Vintage DM Time Window Speakers. I also have a vintage Sansui AU717 Integrated Amp that I bought new and may dig that out. I think that the 506 requires a light weight cartridge because it has a ULM tone arm? I listen to mostly classic rock. What would be a suitable cartridge under 200 Canadian. Thanks so much in advance. This is a awesome site first time posting.

Does your version of the Dual 506 have a standard 1/2 inch cartridge mount at the end of the arm? I know that several of the different 505 series had various cartridge mounts:- some that required original Dual/ Ortofon cartridges, and others had a carrier-slide that had the standard 1/2" mounts.
For your 506, it will probably be best suited to a low-mass type cartridge such as the Ortofon OM-3/5/10 series cartridges - or their own Dual version of those cartridges.
If you have the standard 1/2" mount (where you can screw-in a different type cartridge onto a 'slide' that clips into place) then I would recommend the aforementioned Ortofon cartridges (don't use the supplied weights), as they are ideally suited to the ULM type arms that Dual were using (Ultra Low Mass).
If you can add a photo of the 'headshell' part, and also with the Sanyo cartridge fitted, it would help to identify which type of headshell variant that Dual supplied with your deck....
If you can use a standard cartridge then the Ortofon are well matched, and sound very good playing a wide range of music; slightly more emphasising midrange and treble; though not lacking in bass, it could be better 'controlled'.... the good thing with those Ortofon cartridges is that you can easily upgrade just by changing the stylus: OM-5E up to an OM-10E, or OM-20E for better sound.

The Sanyo MG 28 is a rebranded Excel ES 70 cartridge ( I have it). Get a decent stylus, and it will better most Ortofon mi- cartridges for little money. The Jico/Tonar/Nagaoka-styli are very good.

Thanks for the photos.... That cartridge does look rather nice, and if it performs well, then a new stylus will be fine.
At least you do have the standard 1/2" mounting plate on that arm, which is good, as you could try a range of different cartridges if you wanted. An AT-3600 might surprise with the quality of sound available from such a budget design, and as I previously stated, then the Ortofon low-mass OM series will work very well with that arm. The Ortofon will sound a bit 'warmer' than what you have now, or the AT-3600/Audio Technica cartridge range, but at least you have more flexibility for trying different cartridges.
Those old Dual decks are nice, solid performers, and had, and still have a very good reputation....

Thanks again Yarvelling. I will definitely look at the At-3600. Appreciate the input. I have added a 502 to my collection it needs some work but the price was right. I would love to pick up a Thorens or a Rega eventually but see how it goes.
