P mount moving coil cartridge opinions

Post by Chemchef » 09 Oct 2019 21:18

System in question.
1) Technics sl7 Tt / Signet am20p cartridge
2) Luxman le 109 phono preamp ( upgraded with Mundorf mcap silver caps in signal path)
3) Schiit Valhalla2 headphone amp
Sennheiser hd 650 and other asst. headphones

My issue is I believe the stylus on the Signet cartridge is beginning to go bad.
I once had a Denon 103R hooked up to the system with a different turntable and really enjoyed it. So I would like to go back to another moving coil cartridge. Unfortunately the technics SL 7 excepts only a p mount cartridge.
There seem to be a few options by Technics, Audio Technica and Ortofon. I realize all these are out of production.
However the all seem to show up on the auction site fairly often.
Right now there is an Audio Technica AT312ep and a different auction for an nos replacement styli. ATN312ep.
I am basically tryin to get opinions on if this is a good fit for my system.
The luxman has mc loading option of 3, 40, or 100 ohms.
I can get the whole kit and kaboodle for around $300 including replacement styli.
I could also wait for a well priced Technics 310 mc
Maybe that would be better.
Thanks in advance.

There's a Technics, an Ortofon, the original Sumiko Blue Point, but all of them are discontinued. And they're expensive when you can find one. MC is best done on a medium to high mass tonearm on a turntable which allows freedom of choice, and not stuck with limited choices. The only two companies which make newly produced T4p mount cartridges are Grado and Audio-Technica.

Nagaoka still makes a P-mount cartridge, too. :)

For MC, a rebuilt/retipped Sumiko Blue Point is a good option. Here's one:

I have a Signet AM-30, not P. The stylus from an AT-440 fits.

Cheers,
Alec

I appreciate all the knowledge being shared
Bottom line is. I like to experiment a little, and was curious if anyone has experience with the AT 312ep as I have never saw this cartridge option.
If it’s sub par for an mc cart I would pass on this and get a Technics 310mc.
The thing drawing me to the at312ep is the fact that it has a user replaceable stylus. The fact that I can get a brand new spare stylus is a bonus, where as if I buy a 310 mc. The stylus condition is a crap shoot, and expensive to re tip.

Thank You for the info. i have a few styli that would fit. My favorite being TK7lca but i have a problem with it. One of the v magnets seems to have come off. i just posted a question about fixing it if possible.
the rest of them probably would not be as good as the sam20. on Tthe am20.

This appears to be aka Sanyo aka Red Ed, aka Goldring Elektra/Elan family. So thanks for this post. A useful addition to the remaining currently offered T4p mount universe.

The winner of that Sumiko Blue Point auction got a great deal. Only $111.

My brother-in-law's Sumiko Blue Point Special Evo III sounds real good. I threw my hat in the ring for a minute. :)
I was trying to get it on the cheap too. After It went over my price ceiling, I bought a Signet TK6EP.
When I checked to see the final selling price I was surprised but not shocked. I used to bid primarily on parts to restore my 2002 and antique watches where prices tend to rise quickly. I have noticed on most hi-fi equipment, no so much. However, there have been some exceptions.
Cheers,
WillO
