AT91 / AT3600 Shibata stylus?

Post by james73_2008 » 16 Sep 2019 19:51

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I just found this website:

https://snvinyl.co.uk/ATN91-Shibata-Sty ... ridge-AT91

Has anyone any experience with this?

I've recently been stockpiling 3rd-party stylii for my 31-year-old AT3601 cartridge and so far have a .4x.7 elliptical, a .3x.7 elliptical and a HyperElliptical, and a prototype "Extended Contact" (which is "just a very slightly different profile to the Paratrace") stylus, though I haven't got around to trying any of them out yet. 8)

Very interesting. I've seen aftermarket hyperellipticals and Shibatas for this cartridge family but all of them have been bonded, not nude. The Scott Nagle stylus claims to be nude, which is quite impressive for only costing £126. It almost seems too good to be true. I think you should buy one and report back to us. ;)

The ad in the link that popped up for me clearly stated a bonded Shibata.
I have to say that the 'cheap and cheerful' charm of the 3600 is kind of lost when a stylus that costs eight to ten times as much as the whole cartridge. And while there may be more detail, air, depth and so on, the bouncy fun of the entry level cartridge may be lost. For many, the audiophile benefits will make the choice obvious, but bottom feeders like me may disagree.

They must have changed it shortly after I posted because it said nude when I clicked on it two days ago.

At any rate, £126 for a bonded Shibata is in line with what U.S. merchants charge for their bonded Shibatas (£126 = $157). I'm pretty sure these are all made by JICO. They get good reviews. The JICO-made hyperelliptical also gets good reviews.

Wondering what that hyperelliptical actually is. No radii given (unless I missed it). Could be anything.

I'm listening to the HE right now. The price looked OK at $85 but the extra cost to get it to Europe pulls it very close to that Shibata. I think that's a very low price to get a very good sounding cartridge with a Shibata stylus which is still in a higher league than just HE and closer to vdH/Gyger/ML.

If you already have an extended line contact why bother with an inferior Shibata? Shibata is an old design, the extended line contact will be a larger contact area, last longer and read the same or better highs.
