Is Denon DL103 And Yamaha PX-3 a good match?

Post by BillWojo » 25 Aug 2019 21:34

Looking at getting into a Denon DL103 or 103R, don't really know the difference.
Looking at the Yamaha PX-3 specs it states that the tonearm has a mass of 17 grams. Will that be a good match?
Will probably be building my own SUT, on the hunt for transformers. This will feed the MM input on my Audio Research SP8.
Thank you.

Not too familiar with linear trackers. Not saying it isn't possible. You have the sub weights :?:
It took close to 22 grams of head-shell weight with the nuts, bolts, the head-shell and the 8.5g 103R to hit the (Denon Sound) sweet spot on my Technics 1300. :o The high tracking forces required for the 103 and 103R may be the biggest issue. :|
A DL-301II, a 103D or 103M could be a better fit (lower tracking requirements). I'm sure someone familiar with LTs will chime in.
Good luck.

Can anybody else add to this? I have a DL103 on the way to me.
Thank you

You may find the bass to be a bit thin, with the 103. This relates to the effective mass of the tonearm.
If the bass is thin, find a heavier headshell, or add weight to the one you have until it sounds good.

Cheers,
Alec

Not recommended. Denon DL-103 is best in a high mass (i.e. low compliance) tonearm, usually the type used by broadcast stations. The DL-103 performs acceptably in a medium mass tonearm, but I'd go for a lighter MC offering if you use one at all. Denon DL-301 might work OK. Audio-Technica have had a few MC which work well in lighter tonearms.
