Grace Head Shell Wiring different than other

Post by Vinai1964 » 10 Aug 2019 12:37

I got just got Grace Headshell HS-3 for my Grace F8E. The wiring terminals are color coded so that I couldn’t mix up. But I couldn’t help notice that the wiring at the headshell end is different than Ortofon SH4. See pics.

My question is will this make any different when Ortofon Headshell on Grace 560L arm? Like swapping Left and Right Channel?

The standard wiring for standard headshells/arms is
top, looking from front
LH - RH
LG - RG
which translates to
white - red
blue - green
So your silver headshell should be correct.
You can verify this with a multimeter. The center pins of the RCA plugs are the hot.
I, too, have met a miswired headshell. Luckily, this is an easy fix.

Cheers,
Alec

Right and left are reversed. Lots of people don't know which side of the orchestra is which, and so probably wouldn't really care if it was correct or not (I'm one of them, so this isn't a snobby comment). It's possible that a cartridge had a reversed set of markings and a previous owner just swapped the leads to match, assuming that this isn't the way it was from the factory.

That’s my understanding too. My curiosity stemmed from all the 2nd hand Grace headshell I auctioned from Yahoo! Auction Japan. See pics. They all came wired this “wrong way.” I got 2 HS-3’s and both are color-coded the wrong way. I am really puzzled.

Perhaps anyone with the same Grace headshell can confirm?

I looked up the instruction manual for Grace G565F. And it confirms the “wrong way” wiring! I would also guess Grace tonearm is wired that way too!

Use a multimeter to check continuity from headshell/arm to RCA plugs.

Alec

Hi Alec,

Finally found my multimeter and just did that. (And I did ensure that the probe only touched the connectors and not any other metal parts.) See pics.

It seems like Grace headshell + tonearm system is wired that way. So, if we want to use Grace headshell with other system, we have to wire for other system. And if we want to use other headshell with Grace tonearm, we have to reverse the left & right. But if we want to use Grace Headshell on Grace tonearm, then we keep it as instructed in the user manual.

Nice turntable and arm, first time I've seen a Technics SP-12. I assume the father of the SP-25 turntable being based on the SL-1200 and SL-1200 Mk II. Nice tonearm and Grace headshells. Yes, I'd change the wiring to standard color code in your application. Beautiful photos.

You could switch the Grace headshell wires to standard, then change the Left and Right labels on the RCA plugs, to restore order among all.

Cheers,
Alec

Thank you. Yes, SP-12 is for Japanese market and use the same drive engine as SL-1200. Very little info on the net. Arm is Grace G560 L.

Agree, Alec. I have 3 turntables and would like to keep the cartridge/shell interchangeable. I am just curious why in the world Grace did not follow the standard practice.

My Grace arm has the pins/sockets in the cable connector reversed. I don't know why they did that, either.
But I do love their F-9 cartridges!

Alec

You don't suppose that some of the 'sound' of Grace cartridges is simply channel reversal? I can see a harried reviewer not noticing the reversed leads in a headshell, and that would lead to hearing things anew.
