Looking at 2 Carts

Post by TD 166 MKII » 21 Jul 2019 19:21

Looking at 2 Carts, one is Nagaoka MP-110 and the other being a Goldring 2200.
Anythoughts

Some questions that will help produce some answers for you:
- What arm and turntable will it be used with?
- What music will you play with it?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with either to be able to compare.

I've heard the MP-110 *a lot*, the 2200 rather briefly, so I can't be all that conclusive. That said:

Both cartridges are made by Nagaoka and are therefore quite similar. However, to my ears the 2200 has slightly less warmth and more treble energy and therefore sounds like it is more detailed. Whether that's actually true I'm not sure, as I've not listened to it sufficiently to be able to say.

What I can say is that if you're considering a Goldring MM, the 1042 is still the star in terms of value. Available for 200 quid from Juno Records in London it is a significantly better cartridge than the 2200 to my ears and a steal at the price. It is also superior to the MP-110, being very neutral across the frequency range and also very detailed, while the 110 is decidedly on the warm side. Whether that's a good or bad thing is of course up to you.

The 1042 and MP-110 are both pretty stiff with a compliance of 10 and roughly 11 (10 @ 100Hz x 1.8 = 10.8 @ 10Hz) respectively and so demands an arm with a bit of mass for the best result. If your tonearm is light the 2200 with a compliance of 16 will be better suited, but in that case I would look elsewhere instead, perhaps to something like the VM540ML.

Goldring 1042 is a fantastic cartridge, I use it very often.
However, if it's outside your price range, have a look at Goldring 1006.

Your math is way off:

10 @ 100Hz x 1.8 = 18 @ 10Hz

Cheers,

It is indeed. I don't know how I managed to write 10.8 there, when a compliance significantly higher than 10 was the whole point....

Can't be edited now of course, so thanks for pointing it out.
