help Deciding on a cartridge...

Post by thecatboys » 17 Jul 2019 00:45

I recently purchased a tannoy-micro TM44DD turntable, which came with a MA-282 E cartridge, which looks to be in decent shape, without too much wear on the stylus. However, I brought it into my local record store, and he said he would sell me a new Grado black for 60 bucks, as he said it would sound better... thoughts? Which cartridge should I go with? The one I have or the one he recommends?

What you have is a well regarded cartridge.

If you can find replacement styli for ongoing use, I would stay with this cart.
-maybe LPGear can assist with stylus recommendations?

This is the best I can come up with in regards to a replacement stylus for the MA-282 E.

Re-tipping may be an option in the longer term, should you wish to continue with the Micro Acoustics cart.

Keep the 282! I ran one for many years, until the wifely one accidentally broke the stylus. Fortunately (or not, depending on who you ask), that started me on a quest for a replacement, that included two B&O turntables, a Mitsubishi, and a Linn. And a few cartridges as well. Still wish I had the 282 though.

In the library there is some quite interesting reading on what is termed the Micro-Acoustics System II cartridges.

(Not sure if the 282 belongs to this series?)
Whatever, there was fair bit of cutting edge development undertaken by the company.

Unfortunately, a real downside of the the CD 'era', is that many cartridge manufactures went by the wayside, with ongoing R&D being discontinued.
