Ortofon TMC-200

Post by ray_parkhurst » 08 Jun 2019 03:17

Any info on the subject cartridge? My main turntable is an SL-10 (for better or worse) and this LOMC was supposedly designed for it. Does anyone have info on it? I'd love to get my hands on one to test with it! I have a couple of EPC-310MC and they are wonderful, but would like to compare with other MC P-mount offerings.

You can find some information about the cartridge in a brochure, which is available at the library:

The TMC200 is a rare beast. I keep mulling getting the concorde version of that (MC200) for experimenting with but always find something else to buy. As the EPC-310 is so good, I think at best you would be going sideways rather then forwards with a change.

The Technics LOMC supplied with the SL-10 is the only other T4p mount LOMC ever made. There is the Ortofon X1-MCP HOMC, and a Sumiko Blue Point HOMC for T4p mount, and those 4 are the entire MC offerings in T4p mount ever made.

Well, not quite... there are also the Ortofon X3 and X5 MCP, the Sony XL-MC104P, and the Dynavector DV10P HOMC P-mounts. I had an Ortofon X1 but sold it recently. There were a couple of X3's for sale recently, but I never pulled the trigger. An X5 showed up yesterday, and I just had to have it, so it's on the way to me now. I own a Sony MC104P, and it is one of my reference cartridges. Amazingly good! There have beensome DV10Ps available for a while, but they seem a bit expensive for what they are, and I'm not impressed with the stylus specs. Would be nice if Dynavector had one of their better stylus models in a P-mount. Or perhaps someone here can convince me that their 10-series are wonderful and I'm a fool for passing up such a rare cartridge?

I would bet there are other HOMC out there as well, but probably not so many LOMC if any. I'll keep looking for the TMC200, and maybe get lucky.

Looking through the database, I see there are also a few more LOMC P-mounts as well:

Audio Technica
AT312 HEP
AT322 EP
AT332 EP

Ortofon
MCP10 Super
MCP100 Super

Technics
EPC P 305 MC
EPC P 305 MC MK2
EPC 310 MC MK2

Additionally, seems there is another HOMC:

Adcom HP E II

But again, I am sure there are more, though maybe not very many.

Oops, the AT312HEP is a HOMC P-mount, not LOMC.

Edited to add: But apparently there is also a AT312EP, LOMC.

Thanks for adding more T4p mount MC options. All of them are somewhat rare birds.

Looking through Audio magazine buying guides, I found a couple more MC P-mounts. I should have remembered about one of them, the Azden GM-5PL LOMC. I bought one of these a while back as "NOS", and when I imaged the stylus I found that it had a good amount of asymmetric wear due to the stylus being significantly rotated. I think I published those images in my "Stylus Evaluation Imaging" thread. Honestly I still had a hard time sending it back, as it is quite a hard cartridge to find, but I just didn't feel right about using it. Anyway, here are the two additions:

Azden GM-P5L LOMC
Adcom HP-EII HOMC

I think I will make a separate thread listing all these MC P-mounts as a reference. I have a NOS AT312HEP and a "lightly used" X5-MCP on the way to me, and I am looking forward to listening and imaging these. The X5 is supposed to be a vDH-2.

Does anyone on here speak Danish? I see a Technics SL-10 for sale with an Ortofon TMC200 cartridge on a Danish for sale site, but there is no English version of the site and I can't get past the description. Here is the link to the site:

https://www.dba.dk/pladespiller-technic ... 056119727/

I'd offer a commission to anyone who could negotiate with the seller and purchase the TT with cartridge for me...
