Preamp for my Rega Planar 1 (150-200€)

Post by nitse » 06 May 2019 14:33

Hi guys !
I need your advice. My setup is the following
Pioneer VSX 520
Klipsch RB-51
Rega Planar 1

Therefore I am in need for a Preamp. Budget 150-200€
I am considering Schiit Mani (180€) but I have second thoughts because of the RFI issues that I have read.

Any recommendation ??
Thanks !

Rega Fono Mini A2D ...... a great match for the Rega turntable, and low capacitance too, which'll bring out the higher frequencies more, giving a more 'open' sound.

Here's another vote for the Little bear T10 or T11.

My vote goes to MoFi StudioPhono. Designed by the legendary Tim de Paravicini, and a budget bargain compared to his insanely expensive valve phono pre-amps for Quad and EAR Yoshino.

I totally agree with you. I have read really good reviews for MoFi Studiophono and it is my alternative (although a bit out of budget ≈ 350 euros). I don't know if the price justifies the quality comparing to something cheaper like tha mani.

Another really good alternative is the Lounge LCR MKIII but I can't find it in Europe

I had both and strongly preferred the Studio Phono. Using a GS Reflex M now though.

I also have the Rega Fono A2D mentioned above. Not bad but I did prefer the Studio Phono over it.

I think a lot would depend on what cartridge OP is pairing their new phono stage with and how much they want to spend.

I've found that this unit can have a slightly dark sound compared to other phono stages I've used, which is a slight drawback IMHO. I've been told that may be due to the circuit design and op-amps used.

I do agree that low capacitance is good as it's a lot easier to add capacitance with a phono stage than it is to take it away.

Since you owned both you are the most appropriate person to answer. Do you think that the extra 135$ (That’s the price differences in Europe) of studiophono over Mani worth it?

The problem with the Mani is that it was always hissy and noisy for me over the three years I had it, even before RFI became an issue with my last move. I found the RFI unacceptable personally, so I sold it and moved on.

The Studio Phono is a good preamp IMHO, but it has a fatal flaw. It is not suitable to use with higher output MM/MI cartridges IME. My Goldring 1042 (6.5mV) was too much for it, so I sold it and moved on also. I think with a cartridge that has 4mV or less of measured output, the Studio Phono is a fine choice. If you want to use a cart or cart(s) with higher output than that, I would probably look into something else. I would personally avoid trying to pair things like the Ortofon 2M Series, Goldring 1000 and 2000 series, and Rega MM carts with the Studio Phono.

What is your current cartridge and what cartridge do you plan to get next?

You are really helpful! It’s my first turntable and currently I am using the cartridge that comes with rega planar 1. I think it’s called rega carbon. I haven’t really think about what’s gonna be my next cartridge upgrade. Actually, my concern is to make it work 😜
I have read good reviews about NagaokaMP-110.
